City protective of new Laurel Street surface
BRAINERD CITY COUNCIL
A Golden Gloves boxing event will be allowed to take place Aug. 1 in downtown Brainerd but assurances were needed from organizers that the event wouldn't damage the newly resurfaced Laurel Street.

The Brainerd City Council on Monday approved with a 6-1 vote an application request from Steven Cady for the Golden Gloves event to be hosted in front of Liquor Pigz, 718 Laurel St.

Cady told the council nothing would be anchored into the asphalt of the street, no sidewalks would be blocked, plywood would be placed under the boxing ring to distribute the weight and if chairs on the asphalt are determined to be a problem they will go without.

"As long as you do spread out that weight on the ring itself, I don't think we'd have problems with the fresh pavement," said City Engineer Jeff Hulsether.

In case of damage to the new road, the council asked for a performance bond, which Cady said he would have no problem providing.

The permit is good from noon-9 p.m. on Aug. 1, but Cady said the actual fights would be taking place from about 3-6 p.m., with extra time for cleaning up. Cady also said he would be paying for two Brainerd police officers to staff the event with his own security people.

Voting against was council member Anne Nelson Fisher.

In other action, the council:

Was reminded Citizen Appreciation Day will be 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Thursday.

Set a public hearing on Aug. 3 regarding an alley vacation request from the Brainerd School District and the YMCA between South Seventh and South Eighth streets just north of Pine Street.

Approved sending out notices to 150 property owners whose buildings are in need of repair or paint. Fisher asked that the notices be clear that it is part of a city-wide effort and not singling anyone out. Council member Mary Koep asked that the notices are not threatening but nice.

Made the parking spaces on Front Street between South Sixth and South Seventh streets two-hour parking from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Directed council members Bob Olson and Kevin Goedker, Hulsether and City Planner Mark Ostgarden to meet with the city's three neighborhood groups to determine why the groups have stopped their annual cleanup days.

Approved $33,000 for the purchase and equipping of a 2009 Tahoe as a police vehicle for the Brainerd Police Department. A current Tahoe used by the department that has 83,000 miles on it, which is too many for emergency patrol use, Police Chief John Bolduc said, will be given to the Brainerd Fire Department to replace one of its squads that has more than 100,000 miles on it.
