What had been the worst-kept secret in Minnesota was officially revealed this morning when MacMillan Bloedel of Canada confirmed it will build a $74 million wood plant near Deerwood. Gov. Rudy Perpich was on hand to applaud the decision.

William Sullivan, a Brainerd man who claimed former Police Officer Randall Bush abused him during a 1978 arrest, has received a cash settlement of nearly $5,000 from the city's insurance carrier. City Clerk Dick Johnson would not confirm the amount.

(Photo) Doug Murschel, of Minneapolis, hooked this pair of northerns within 30 minutes on Ruth Lake. The first weighed 19 pounds and the second 10-3. He used a Rapala lure and six-pound test line.

The Brainerd Braves beat a barnstorming baseball team, the Broadway Clowns, for the first time 6-2. Starting pitcher Whitey Skoog singled to start a three-run rally, and Marv Bollig launched a solo blast, his second homerun in two games.

Developments give further evidence that the Brainerd Air Meet set for Rosko Field will be outstanding. A powerful Eaglerock Hisso-motored plane flown by a naval aviator has been added and there will be both daylight and moonlight charter flights for visitors.
100 years ago (1909)
R. B. Dear and party came to Brainerd yesterday from his cottage on the north shore of Serpent Lake. They drove in his big Pierce Arrow and made the trip in one hour and twenty minutes, bought supplies and returned in time for dinner.
