Business notes
Intern joins Lakewood Health System
STAPLES - Internships available at Lakewood Health System, Staples, include the student internship program for high school-aged students, medical student internships, the Rural Physician Associate Program and administrative internships.

Scott Madsen, a Menahga native, is interning under the direction of Tim Rice, Lakewood Health System's president, in administration and finance.

Madsen is a student at Concordia College and will be graduating in December with a double major in health care administration and accounting. Madsen interned at MeritCare in Fargo, N.D. under Paul Richard, executive vice president/general counsel. After graduation, Madsen has plans to participate in the joint master of business administration and law degree program at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul.

Lofquist accepted for geriatric program

Shirley Lofquist of Deerwood, a Central Lakes College practical nursing instructor, has been accepted for the Minnesota Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellency FLAG (Faculty Learning about Geriatrics) program for 2009-2010.

The program is designed for faculty, doctoral nursing students and advanced practice nurses who want to develop or increase their expertise in teaching geriatric nursing.

Lofquist has been a full-time instructor at CLC since 2005.

Wolf joins Close-Converse

Emily Wolf recently joined Close-Converse, commercial properties, Brainerd, as the listing coordinator.

Wolf has several years of experience in communication and news media, as well as a degree in journalism and electronic media production from Ashland University in Ohio.

Thompson gains certification

STAPLES - Lakewood Health System nurse practitioner Kelly Thompson recently attended training and became certified to administer the birth control Implanon, which includes both inserting and removing the single-rod implantable device.

Implanon is a small, thin, implantable hormonal contraceptive that is effective for up to three years.

Marco acquires company, expands

Marco Inc. announced the acquisition of AllStar Digital Products Inc. as of July 6.

AllStar is a provider of copy/print solutions in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Mark Bowers, president and owner of AllStar, will become part of the Marco team along with their other employees. Jeff Gau, Marco chief executive officer reported the acquisition supports Marco's strategy to expand its market area to South Dakota.

Six commissioners named by Mille Lacs Band

ONAMIA - The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe announced the appointment of six commissioners, who serve on the Chief Executive Marge Anderson's cabinet.

They are: John Dunkley, commissioner of administration; Carol Shaw, assistant commissioner of administration; Jennifer Waltman, commissioner of community development; Dennis Olson, commissioner of education; Don Eubanks, commissioner of health and human services; Curt Kalk, commissioner of natural resources.

Deron Dunkley continues to fill the role of commissioner of corporate affairs, part of the cabinet, until a new commissioner is named.

Students awarded Landis+Gyr scholarships

PEQUOT LAKES - Kimber Amweg and Jennifer Glenski were awarded $5,000 college scholarships from Landis+Gyr, Pequot Lakes.

Amweg, daughter of Landis+Gyr employee, Jim Amweg, is a 2009 graduate of Brainerd High School. She is enrolled in the Honors College at the College of Charleston, Charleston, S.C. She plans to major in biochemistry with plans to work in research pharmacology.

Glenski, daughter of Susan Blass, is a 2009 graduate of Pequot Lakes High School. She will be attending Minnesota State University-Moorhead and plans to focus on international studies.

Each year, Landis+Gyr awards up to five scholarships to children of company employees.

Audiologist earns doctorate

Whitnea R. Engelbrecht, Brainerd, was awarded the degree of doctor of audiology by Salus University George S. Osborne College of Audiology in Elkins Park, Pa.

Engelbrecht completed her undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, earning a bachelor's degree in communication disorders and a master's in audiology degree.

Engelbrecht is a practicing audiologist at the Brainerd Medical Center.

Office management, 'green' skills courses offered

Central Lakes College in Brainerd has scheduled many short courses this summer for those interested in learning skills associated with current and future employment opportunities.

They are grouped under three Business and Industry Center program areas in collaboration with Rural CEP and the WorkForce Center for displaced or unemployed workers.

Administrative Office Management provides training associated with entry-level office leadership, office manager, and administrative assistant.

Retro Green Construction training teaches construction aspects for energy-efficient public and private building certification.

Renewable-Sustainable Energy training includes some of the sessions that come with the previous two, such as communication skills, business etiquette and basic computer skills. It also includes alternative fuels, residential and commercial wind generators, solar panels and geothermal systems. Sessions are scheduled in July, August, September and October. 'Going Into Business' tips at CLC July 23

"Going Into Business For Yourself" will be offered from 6-9 p.m., July 23 at the Business and Industry Center on the campus of Central Lakes College, Brainerd.

Follow-up counseling is available to qualified individuals from the Small Business Development Center's team of consultants at no charge to the individual.

Friday Morning Coffee planned in Little Falls

LITTLE FALLS - The Chamber of Commerce in Little Falls is hosting its Friday Morning Coffee networking event from 7:30-9 a.m. Friday Lutheran Care Center/Bridgeway Estates, 1200 First Ave. N.E., Little Falls.

Chamber members, employees and guests are invited. Announcements and introductions will be made at 8:15 a.m. Sponsoring this month is Lutheran Care Center/Bridgeway Estates.

Strategies for Smart Giving workshop planned

Strategies for Smart Giving: When to Say "Yes" and How to Say "No" workshop and webinar presented by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce.

The Brainerd Lakes Chamber is hosting the event from 8-9:30 a.m. July 21 at the Northland Arboretum, 14250 Conservation Drive. The workshop is designed to help people better understand why and how they give and how they can be more strategic in making those decisions.

Each participant will receive a free copy of Minnesota Business Giving and Community Involvement Workbook (a $24.95 value) as a guide for the discussion.

The fee to attend is $20 for chamber members and $35 for non-members for both the in-person workshop or webinar. This fee includes your copy of the workbook, a light breakfast for those attending in person, or the webinar technology for those attending via online. Lakes Vybe luncheon planned Thursday

Lakes Vybe Luncheon networking event is planned on 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Thursday at the Sawmill Inn, 601 Washington St. in Brainerd. Participants will review and discuss 88 positive networking tips from the book "Work the Pond." Lakes Vybe is a networking group within the Brainerd Lakes Chamber for individuals ages 21-40. Nisswa Women's Club meeting planned July 16

NISSWA - The Nisswa Women's Club plans to host its monthly membership meeting at noon Thursday with a social time from 11:30 a.m. to noon, at the Marina II restaurant at Breezy Point Resort.

The program topic will be "Entertaining Made Easy."

Hostesses for the meeting are Nancy Baxter, chair, Myrlin Wagner, Judy Green, Ce Ce Stark and Jeanyne Hess. The inspirational will be given by Marlene Cox.

Northwestern Mutual Foundation donates $10,000

The Northwestern Mutual Foundation is announcing a $10,000 grant for Lakes Area Pregnancy Support Center on behalf of its Baxter financial representative's volunteer involvement.

The company said the donation came in recognition of Northwestern Mutual financial representative James Donovan's dedication to the organization.

In honor of his contributions, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation is naming Donovan an "Outstanding Volunteer" in the company's national Community Service Award program, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary.

Donovan will be presented with the Community Service Award during Northwestern Mutual's annual meeting on July 21 at the company's headquarters in Milwaukee.
