City taxpayers, who might lose as much as $1.5 million in the Brainerd International Trade Centre project, have also been paying its utility bills. The city council voted in April to cover two buildings at the site but appear to have been paying for others.

The general Brainerd area faces the possibility of being a flyover area unless the runway is extended to accommodate larger commercial jets, Tom Fitzpatrick, chairman of the Airport Expansion Volunteer Committee, said yesterday.

First Lt. Michael Sinclair, who attended school here several years and is the grandson of Gertrude Smith, Brainerd, has just been released from Walter Reed Hospital in D. C. He has been awarded four Bronze Stars, the Silver Star and the Purple Heart in Vietnam.
60 years ago (1949)
Authorities dragging Lake Edward today in an effort to recover a drowning victim were aided by an airplane flying over the lake. The victim was believed to have fallen overboard last night while fishing.
80 years ago (1929)
An electric train - automobile crash on Highway No. 2, just east of the Brainerd Country Club golf course, killed four people who have yet to be identified. The M & I train, driven by a veteran engineer jammed the brakes but couldn't stop.
100 years ago (1909)
T. F. Cole, of Deerwood, was in Brainerd today in a brand new International Harvester brand of motor carriage. He will use it in visiting his various iron prospecting drills around the area.
