Hanson to captain Team Minnesota Area golf Sports Writer Barb Hanson is being asked a lot of questions this summer.
That's because the Crosslake business owner and resident was selected to captain the women's Minnesota team during the eighth USGA State Team Championships this September.

Hanson is a native of south Minneapolis and attended Augsburg College. She is actively involved in amateur golf administration at the state and regional levels, having served as a past president of the Minnesota Women's Golf Association. She is a regional vice president of the MGA, a member of its executive committee and sits on its regional affairs committee. Hanson has attended USGA Rules School and regularly volunteers as a tournament rules official.
Despite the long list of off-course ventures, which include her business Corporate Golf Services, she said being selected as captain is the icing on the cake - so far.

"It feels good," said Hanson. "It's the highlight to my life, especially my life as a golfer. I've been involved with the USGA as a competitor in two USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championships and it is beyond what you can even dream up. The tournaments are so well run. Everything is very professional that it's a treat to be there. I know this one will be the same. It will be thrilling to be a part of the national golf scene and be in a position very few get to be in."
Hanson, 64, is as accomplished on the course as she is off it. Along with the two appearances in the USGA Senior Amateur she's been club champion on the local level at her Whitefish Golf Club in Pequot Lakes.
Yet, nothing could prepare her for the news of her selection.
"It was a complete surprise," said Hanson. "I have sat on the selection committee previously as president of the MWGA, but I had no clue that I would be considered for that position. I'm extremely honored and very excited about the opportunity."
An MGA selection committee, including Hanson, will pick six amateur golfers later this summer, rounding out Minnesota's women's teams. The women will play Sept. 1-3, at Sycamore Hills Golf Club, in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The State Team Championship, a biennial event in which each state is represented by non-collegiate, amateur golfers, grew out of the USGA's Centennial celebration in 1995. Team scores are based on the best two-of-three stroke-play scores from each day.
"The ladies at league have been congratulatory of me," said Hanson. "But a lot of people aren't aware of how big this is. It's only begun in 1995. I have a lot of people asking what this is anyway. When they realize what this is, they are very congratulatory."
Hanson herself is a little in the dark as to what a captain's responsibilities are, but she has a pretty good idea.
"I have a feeling I'll probably do some organizational things with the team. Get them were they need to be. Decide who is going to practice when and what order they will be playing. I'll be in charge of the logistics for the whole team.
"I haven't been to a meeting to find out for sure yet. I just said, 'Yes' to whatever it is."
According to a press release by the MGA Minnesota amateurs have shined in the event. The men's team has won twice in 1997 and 2001 and nearly won in 1999. It also holds two more top 10s.
The women's team won in 2001 and holds four top 10 finishes.
"We've had a good history," said Hanson. "I'll be part of the selection meeting July 29. The team will be based on how well the women play during the state competitions the last two summers."
