Potlatch Reunion Picnic planned
The sixth annual Potlatch Reunion Picnic will be this weekend at St. Mathias Park. Events begin at 2 p.m. Saturday with the picnic at 3 p.m.

Cost is $5 per person, $8 per couple or $10 per family.

Brats, hot dogs and polish sausage will be provided with coffee and Kool-Aid. Overnight camping is available until noon Sunday. A potluck breakfast will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday. RSVP to John Cullett at 829-8805 or Ken Zelinske at 829-0222.

Brainerd community meeting planned for ages 18-30

Brainerd residents, age 18 to 30, who want a chance to share their concerns about their community and work together with neighbors to address common problems, are invited to a community meeting.

Participating younger adult residents will have a chance to be heard and win prizes for participating in the informal session.

Prizes include a flat screen TV, gas cards, among others. The community meeting for younger adults is from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Brainerd Public Library.

A group of community leaders from around the Brainerd lakes area, together with the Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation and the Initiative Foundation, and a student researcher from the University of Wisconsin are working together to identify issues faced by younger adults in the Brainerd area and to work together to address some of these issues. The UW graduate student will be leading the meeting. She is working on a dissertation about the well-being of young adults in the Brainerd lakes area and would appreciate input.

A free supper will be served and child care will be provided on site.

Finnegans Community Fund announces recipients

Finnegans, the locally brewed Irish Amber beer company that donates 100 percent of its profits to charities, announced first quarter grant recipients.

The Finnegans Community Fund is donating $6,000 to six charities throughout the state of Minnesota. New Pathways Inc. will receive $1,000 to support its Family Day Center program in Brainerd, which provides homeless families with children a center to access the Internet, low-income housing lists, a guest phone for business inquiries and staff to educate and assist them in achieving self-reliance. The grant will support the day center's ability to provide personal care items, clothing, etc., for families in need.

Nokasippi Watershed annual meeting planned Saturday

The annual meeting for the Nokasippi Watershed is planned at 10 a.m. Saturday at Long Lake Town Hall.

Guest speaker Todd Peterson, DNR water specialist, will provide information:

¥ Sand and gravel units that form aquifers in Crow Wing County including location and groundwater-flow directions.

¥ How sensitive the various aquifers are to pollution from the land surface.

¥ How groundwater interacts with and is related to lake water.

¥ The status of groundwater mapping in Crow Wing County.

In addition, Nokasippi Watershed progress will be discussed.

An aquifer is an underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock or unconsolidated materials (gravel, sand, silt or clay) from which groundwater can be usefully extracted using a water well.

Five people file for Little Falls School Board

LITTLE FALLS - Five people filed for one of the three open four-year term seats on the Little Falls School Board.

Seats that expire at the end of this year are held by board members Robert Stoltman, Greg Zylka and Karen Idstrom. Stoltman and Zylka filed for another term. Others who filed were Leslie Russell-Martin, Marge Brutscher and former school board member, Jay Spillum.

There will not be a primary election for the school board because not enough people filed. In order for a primary election, seven people would have had to file.

Other area schools with school board elections this year include Crosby-Ironton, Pierz, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, Wadena and Pine River. The filing period for these schools will be Aug. 26 through Sept. 9.

Motorcycle rider course scheduled at CLC

Central Lakes College has scheduled a Basic Rider Course for motorcyclists at the Brainerd campus Aug. 7, 9 and 10.

Motorcycles are provided at no charge. Riders age 18 and up can earn their motorcycle license by successfully completing the course. It is recommended that registrants have a permit before attending this class.

The fee is $160. Dates and times are 5:30-10 p.m. Aug. 7 and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. or 2-7 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10. Registration deadline is July 31.

Coalition to End Poverty met

The Crow Wing County Area Coalition to End Poverty met Tuesday to have its first visioning session, which was facilitated by consultant Karl Samp.

The visioning session included 22 people from more than 12 different nonprofits, businesses, faith communities, foundations and others.

The session took place to discuss the first steps in moving the coalition forward and to begin making a change in the lakes area.

The coalition plans to kick off activities in the fall with a community-wide event.

Benefit planned for Frederick

PINE RIVER - There will be a benefit for Kenny Frederick from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at the Pine River Fire Hall. Cost: $8 for adults; kids (6-12), $5; kids under 6 are free. There will be a pig roast, raffle and silent auction.

Frederick, an EMT for North Ambulance for 17 years, was diagnosed with having a brain tumor and stage four glioblastoma, an aggressive type of cancer. He currently travels to Abbott Northwestern every month to receive liquid chemotherapy.

Frederick served as a volunteer firefighter for the Pine River Fire Department and was active on the city council.

Proceeds from this benefit will help with the cost associated with Frederick's financial needs. A fund has been established at the Pine River State Bank.

Supplemental funds have been applied through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Cass/Hubbard chapter.
