It's not known what led to a brutal attack late Tuesday in a northeast Brainerd neighborhood.
What is known is that two people - one woman and one man - were arrested and two men are wanted by police following the assault of a 35-year-old Brainerd man who remains hospitalized.
At 11:35 p.m., Brainerd police officers were called to a fight between the victim and four to six individuals at Seventh Avenue Northeast near J Street. Upon arrival they found Cameron Quickbear unconscious and observed several people fleeing the area.
Police Chief John Bolduc said Quickbear was driving by a residence on Seventh Avenue Northeast and engaged in some type of conversation with a group of people standing in the yard. Bolduc declined to discuss what police believe was the nature of the conversation but said Quickbear may have provoked his assailants. Sticks and bats that may have been used in the assault were recovered at the scene, he said.
Andrea Fitch of Brainerd was arrested in the attack on Cameron Quickbear.
Quickbear was transported in critical condition to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd then airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where a hospital spokesman said he was in fair condition Wednesday afternoon.
The suspects in the assault are described as four black males in their 20s to 30s, all wearing dark clothing. Anyone with information about the assault is asked to call the Brainerd Police Department at 829-2805.
"It's not certain these guys knew each other previously or something precipitated the disagreement or what, but we're looking into that," Bolduc said.
Andrea Fitch, a 26-year-old Brainerd woman believed to be an acquaintance of the suspects, was arrested late Tuesday after giving a statement to police at the Brainerd Police Department. She is being held in the Crow Wing County jail for second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
Fitch has been charged with several crimes in Crow Wing County since 2002, including gross misdemeanor check forgery, gross misdemeanor financial transaction card fraud, misdemeanor theft of services, fifth-degree assault, fourth-degree DUI, theft by shoplifting, indecent conduct and trespassing. She also has been charged in Stearns County with gross misdemeanor theft in 2003 and felony theft in 2006.
About 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, one of the suspects turned himself into Brainerd Police officers. The name of the man wasn't immediately available Wednesday night, but Bolduc said he is being held at the Crow Wing County Jail on assault charges. Bolduc also said that, based on information from that suspect, officers were able to locate the vehicle in which the suspects fled.
Bolduc said his department has had previous contact with the suspects in the assault.
Quickbear also has an extensive criminal history in Minnesota. A search of state court records shows Quickbear has served prison sentences for obstruction of the legal process in 1996; second-degree assault, terroristic threats and escape from custody in 1998; terroristic threats in 2003; and second-degree assault in 2004.
