Engineering camp draws record number of youths
STAPLES - The annual Summer Engineering and Manufacturing Camp at the Staples campus of Central Lakes College July 6-10 drew a record 43 participants, including youths from as far as Massachusetts.

For ages 10-17, the day camp offered hands-on learning in electronics, motor controllers, mechanical drafting, machining, and robotics automated systems. These are program areas offered to college students on the Staples campus during the academic year.

The camp is offered as part of the Center of Excellence at Bemidji State University and its partnering colleges, including CLC.

Students on the last day of the camp participate in competition to test their robots. They construct the devices from kits that have hundreds of parts and require skills taught in the camp.

Awards are given to the first, second, and third-place teams.

Obstacle Course: First Place - Joe Kepner and Brett Gontarek, both of Breezy Point. Second Place - Anthony Ring, Long Prairie, Brian Barneveld, Aitkin. Third Place - Grant Warwas, Baxter, Andrew Ring, Long Prairie.

Robot Hockey: First Place - Kepner and Gontarek, Breezy Point, Alissa Johnson, Minnetonka, Megan Pachan, Long Prairie. Second Place - Drew Peterson, Staples, Jacob Hyytinen, Aitkin, Josh Mattson, Brainerd, and Hackett Cook, Natick, Mass. Third Place - Ethan Peterson, Staples, Tyler Miller, Baxter, Sam Petron, Long Prairie.

Demolition Derby: First Place - Drew Peterson, Staples, Jacob Hyytinen, Aitkin. Second Place - Alexander Ryan, Baxter, Jeremiah Hoffman, Brainerd. Third Place - Logan Sonnenberg, Detroit Lakes, CJ Orsburn, Brainerd.
