OUTDOORS NOTES
Family outdoor event slated at Deep Portage
Families are invited to participate in a weekend of outdoor skills activities Aug. 8-9 during the DNR's Family Outdoor Weekend at the Deep Portage Environmental Learning Center near Hackensack.

The event includes classes on climbing, shooting, archery, orienteering and fishing.

"Families enjoy learning skills together and spending time outdoors," said Linda Bylander, DNR Becoming An Outdoors Woman coordinator. "This event is a great way for families to learn beginning skills without having to purchase equipment."

Indoor lodging and meals are provided on site. The cost of the event is $60 per person or $220 for a family of four. Registration includes lodging, meals, equipment and instruction. Scholarships, made possible by The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Pheasants Forever, are available.

For more information, call Deep Portage at (888) 280-9908 or download the event brochure at mndnr.gov/bow.

State land reforestation and herbicide application in the Brainerd area

The DNR plants trees on state lands to reforest harvested areas, provide wildlife habitat, protect watershed values and maintain the quality of state forests.

Such an effort is under way in the Brainerd area, ending about Sept. 15. Professional foresters determine the tree species appropriate for the site, while the DNR hires private contractors to do the actual planting.

This year, local DNR foresters planted more than 125 acres in the Brainerd area during April and May. More than 41,900 trees, predominantly pines and spruces, have been hand planted on sites prepared during the past year.

Project Learning Tree grant supports C-I community education

A Crosby-Ironton community education program recently received a GreenWorks! grant of $1,650 from Project Learning Tree, a national environmental education program sponsored in Minnesota by the DNR.

Cuyuna SALT (Service-Adventure-Leadership-Team) will utilize the grant for numerous projects.

The DNR's partnership with national PLT enables schools and teachers to provide outdoor educational experiences. Since 1992, PLT has distributed more than $600,000 to fund 873 grant projects in communities across the country. Grants up to $5,000 are available to applicants who have completed a PLT training.

Shoreland planting workshop on Mille Lacs

A shoreland planting workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on Lake Mille Lacs.

Approximately 1,400 square feet of shoreline that is currently a combination of sandy dry areas, eroding slope, and wet meadow shoreline, will be landscaped with native plants.

To register for the free workshop, call the Aitkin County SWCD at (218) 927-6565.

To find the planting site, take U.S. Highway 169 north from Garrison to Nichols. Turn right onto 455th Avenue, then left onto Pike Avenue. Proceed until you reach 21400 Pike Avenue.
