OUTDOORS NOTES Youth archery deer hunt set at Camp Ripley
Camp Ripley again will host a youth deer hunt this fall, according to the DNR.
The DNR is offering 11 Special Youth Deer Hunts in October - four archery and seven firearms. Eligible youth may apply for one archery hunt and one firearms hunt. Youth ages 12 to 15 are eligible for the firearms hunts; those ages 12 to 17 are eligible for the archery hunts. Camp Ripley, located near Little Falls, will host an archery hunt Oct. 10-12.
Those interested may apply at any DNR Electronic License System vendor or at the DNR License Center at 500 Lafayette Road in St. Paul. Successful applicants will be notified in early September. Youths who applied unsuccessfully in previous years will have preference. The deadline to apply for the hunts is Aug. 15.
There is no fee to apply, although successful applicants must purchase the appropriate deer-hunting license prior to their hunt. Youth individual firearms and youth individual archery licenses are $14 each and available to residents ages 12 to 17.
There is a mandatory orientation session for each hunt, and hunters must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or adult authorized by the parent. All youth firearm hunters must possess a valid Firearms Safety Certificate.

Brainerd's Lothspeich wins bowfin title
Dennis Lothspeich of Brainerd won the Minnesota Bowfin Club's 2008 Grand Championship.
Lothspeich, one of many seasoned bass anglers who compete regularly in the annual competition, caught and released a 26-inch bowfin on Whitefish Lake, catching the winner on a black and blue swim jig.
Dave Maas, the only two-time grand champion (2004 and 2006) was second with a 24-inch fish from Platte Lake, caught on a purple Berkley Frenzy Popper. Chuck Fields, the winner in 2000, finished third with a 23.5-inch fish taken on a Northland jig on an undisclosed lake in the Brainerd area.

Pathway to Fishing program scheduled
The Journey Church of Nisswa will host a Pathway to Fishing youth educational program Wednesday following the turtle races in downtown Nisswa.
The program, from 3-4:30 p.m., will be outdoors at the Journey Church, just south of the turtle races. A second program is scheduled Aug. 20.
Pathway to Fishing is a 12-station, one-hour walk-through program that teaches fishing basics, aquatic ecology and angler ethics. It's geared toward youth who have little or no fishing experience. Parents or guardians are encouraged to accompany the children and learn with them.
Children participating will receive a certificate of completion, tackle, bait samples and more.
For more information, contact Gary Hasse, Pathway coordinator, at (218) 568-5802 or the Journey Church at (218) 963-2663.
