FISHING MINNESOTA: THE MINE PITS
The mine pits.

In these parts, the words conjure up images of deep, cold, clear-blue water, shimmering rainbow trout and, well, mines that before they were majestic lakes defined the areas they inhabited.

The Cuyuna Range and northeastern Minnesota's Iron Range are two such areas. Once proud mining communities, they now are home to dozens of picturesque fishing lakes.

Miner's Lake in Ely is one of some 20 "pit" lakes across northeastern Minnesota's Iron Range. The Range's pit lakes are featured today in North Country. Later this summer, the Dispatch will chronicle the rustic beauty that is the Cuyuna Range pit lakes.
