Just For Kix to host camps at Forestview Middle School
Just For Kix in the Brainerd lakes area hosted three three-day camps at Forestview Middle School in Baxter.
The first camp was for the seventh- through high school students; another camp was for the kindergarten-ninth grade camp; and the third camp was for the seventh-though high school students.
Teams and individuals came from all over the region for the two high school camps. The camp draws both dance studios and school dance teams. Styles covered are hip hop, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, kick and pom. Teams work on both choreographed material as well as technique. They also learn methods to increase their fitness and flexibility and team building techniques to help teams bond and connect. This year Rick Rassier, a team building expert, was to teach a special seminar on team building. Senior dancers also take a class on self-defense from Tim Kiel. Captains leadership classes as well as senior leadership classes were offered. Rookies attend becoming coachable.
Coaches have a convention while their dancers are at camp. Coaches attend four to five classes daily on various coaching elements: Discipline, coaching jazz, coaching kick, score analysis, choreography and pilates for the dancer.
This year featured keynote speaker for coaches was Brainerd High School football coach Ron Stolski who shared lessons learned in five decades of coaching.
Featured staff at the camps were Casper Smart of Los Angeles. Also teaching master classes at the camp was Karl Mundt of Boston and a choreographer for the University of Minnesota three-time National Championship Dance Team.
