Several classical music concerts set in lakes area
Scott Lykins, a native of Brainerd and cellist, who has just received his bachelor's degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., will be the heart of the Lakes Area Chamber Music Festival set in the Brainerd lakes area.

Lykins and other students from Eastman, including Meghan Attridge, Maria Bellanca and John Taylor Ward, who study voice and opera, and Alexander Pena, a violist, will be alongside guest artists and community members to perform four concerts in area churches and two pre-festival concerts both at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brainerd.

The first pre-concert will be 2 p.m. Sunday called "Classics of Musical Theater," which will include favorites from "Oklahoma!," "South Pacific," "Show Boat," "The Music Man," and "Cabaret." The second pre-concert will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 2 called "The German Romantics" and will include string and vocal music by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Strauss and Mahler.

The first Lakes Area Chamber Music Festival concert will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 9 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter where Lykins will perform works by Beethoven, Schumann, Poulenc and Prokofiev.

A second concert called "A Night at the Opera" will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 12 at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa with vocal chamber music and opera scenes by Eastman students and guest artists.

The third concert called "Community Musicians" will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd and will feature the talents of local string, wind, brass and keyboard musicians.

The "Grand Finale" concert will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 19 at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa. String chamber music with guest artists from the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Minnesota Orchestra will be featured.

All the concerts will be free to the public, but freewill offerings will be accepted. If you would like to make a tax-deductible gift to the festival, make checks made payable to the Crossing Arts Alliance to Scott Lykins, 1414 Pinehurst Lane, Nisswa, MN 56468.

Intergenerational art classes being offered

The Crossing Arts Alliance will offer a series of art classes designed for adults and children in the Franklin Arts Center taught by Minnesota artist Dar Brooks.





This is one of Minnesota artist Dar Brooks art pieces. Brooks will be teaching a series of art classes beginning Friday at the Franklin Arts Center in Brainerd.



The Family Art Class is designed for parents, grandparents and children together. It will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday and the class requires no previous art experience.

A class for adults on Spontaneous Watercolor with Creative Visualization will be offered Saturday and Sunday. This class is intended to help with creative motivation and self-confidence, exploring the use of mixed media, unique acrylic and water color techniques.

The Intensive Art Camp is for ages 9-109 and will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through July 30. Brooks said this class is an instructor intensive program and participants will receive 20 hours of personal instruction.

Brooks is an award winning multi-media artist who has been teaching in the Twin Cities art community for more than 22 years, as well as teaching in other areas of the United States, France and Mexico. Her artwork is currently showing at the International Euro Greens Gallery in Hong Kong. Brooks describes her teaching style as fun, spontaneous and easy for adults and children to follow along as they enhance their art skills.

Russell final author in Brown Bag Lunch series

Maxine Russell will be the final author for the Friends of the Brainerd Public Library Brown Bag Lunch Summer Speakers' Series set from noon-1 p.m. Monday.

The event is free and open to the public.

Russell, a longtime Brainerd resident, is the author of a number of books including her latest, "Celebrating One Hundred," poems to celebrate her 100th birthday, which she finished at age 97. Among her many honors, she was the League of Minnesota Poet Laureate from 2001-2006, life member of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association and the 1990 Award of Merit winner from the Minnesota State Horticulture Society. Her books include "Jungle Angel: Bataan Remembered," "Leaves from a Greenhouse," and "Honey in the Heart." Her poetry books include "Hidden Light," which contains 200 poems.

Groneberg is next organist in Summer Organ Series

Bonnie Groneberg will perform in the Summer Organ Series at noon Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church, at Ninth and Juniper streets in Brainerd.

Admission is free.

Groneberg is music director at St. Francis. She plays for three Masses each Sunday, directs and accompanies the church's adult choir and plays piano and French horn in numerous ensembles, including the Heartland Symphony, Central Lakes Brass, Central Lakes Community Band and piano with El Nino, a big band/swing band.

Erik Kier to perform at Staples Music in the Park

STAPLES - Erik Kier will present a concert in the Staples Music in the Park series at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Northern Pacific Park across from the Government Center at 611 Iowa Ave. N.E. In case of inclement weather, the concert will move to Centennial Auditorium, 401 Centennial Lane.

The concerts will run through Aug. 16.

Kier's love of music started at an early age and he has played a variety of instruments in his lifetime, ranging from brass instruments to guitar and most recently electric bass. His style is a mix of alternative, folk and the blues.

The Music in the Park Series is funded by the Staples Host Lions Club. The series is organized by the Staples Motley Area Arts Council, with the assistance of the Staples Motley Public Schools and the city of Staples.
