Vernon G. Lueth
BEMIDJI - Vernon Glenn Lueth, 78, of Bemidji, died Monday, July 20, 2009, at Innovis Health in Fargo, N.D.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 24, 2009, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Bemidji, Minn., with the Rev. Genelle Netland officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. with prayers and reflections at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji and one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Bemidji with military honors by the Bemidji VFW Post No. 1260.
Vern was born Nov. 27, 1930, to John and Elsie (Mielke) Lueth on the farm three miles northeast of Hurdsfield, N.D. The family lived briefly in Washington and Montana before returning to Hurdsfield, N.D., where he attended school and graduated from Hurdsfield High School in 1948.
He attended Concordia College where he met Virginia Lee Franklin and he graduated in 1952. They married Sept. 4, 1954, in Roseau, Minn.
He served in the Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean conflict with the 10th Infantry Division, 87th Regiment stationed at Fort Riley, Kan.
He returned to graduate school at the University of Minnesota, graduating with a master's degree in education in 1955.
Vern had a long and meaningful career in education over 32 years. He began his career in Buffalo, Minn., as a history teacher from 1955-56. He then became principal in Longville, Minn., from 1956-59. They moved back to Buffalo where he served as high school principal.
He then became an assistant principal at Orono, Minn., during which time he completed additional graduate work. He returned to Buffalo and was high school principal for several years until being hired as superintendent at Grand Marais, Minn., where the family lived from 1974-80. He was named superintendent at Pine River, Minn., retiring in 1987. He and Virginia moved to Bemidji in 1994.
Over his lifetime, Vern was active in Lion's Club, Rotary Club, church and many community boards, committees and activities in every community in which he lived. In 1986, he was elected administrator of the year by the Minnesota Association of Educational Office Professionals, and in 2006 he was honored with the Regent's Award at Concordia College. He also was named a Bush Educational Leader.
Vern had a lifelong love of travel and traveled extensively with his family and friends, was an amazing history buff, as well as being an avid sports fan and civic events supporter. He loved hunting, gardening, reading, but most of all his extended family.
Vern was a dedicated caregiver for his spouse for many years providing incredible support and attention to her every need.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lueth, of Bemidji; four children, John (Cindy) Lueth, of Bemidji, Joan Lueth, of Beijing, China, Sue (Mark) Read, of Deephaven, Minn., and Jennifer Ruigh, of Bemidji; six grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer (Mark) Lueth Willett, Marit Lueth, Kati Lueth, Michaela Read, Daniel Read and Nicholas Ruigh; two sisters, Lorna (F.A.) Zirbel, of Bowdon, N.D., Doris (Arnold "Casey") Stengel, of Brainerd, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Kay (Roger) (Franklin) Strandlie, of Walker, Minn., Judy (Franklin) Loeffler, of Walker, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Honorary casket bearers will be the "Sattre Six" - Corky Fugelstad, Clayton Jensen, Carroll Kastelle, Lowell Swisher, Robert Underdal, Elliot Wold.
Active casket bearers will be Randy Stengel, Shawn Stengel, Chris Strandlie, Joe Lessard, Ron Koetter and Tom Schwartz.
Memorials are preferred to Struthers Parkinson Center in Minneapolis, Calvary Lutheran Church, Operation Bootstrap Tanzania and Concordia College in Moorhead.
