LOCAL BRIEFS Cutest Baby Animal Contest scheduled at county fair
The Crow Wing County Farm Bureau will once again sponsor the Cutest Baby Animal Contest at the Crow Wing County Fair July 31-Aug. 4.
Photographs (4x6) of baby animals must be sent by Wednesday to Rosanne Caughey, 10796 Buehler Road, Ft. Ripley, MN 56479. Include a 3x5 index card with your name, address, phone number and name, age and species of animal.
The farm bureau will award prizes of $25, $15, and $10. All photos become the property of the Crow Wing County Farm Bureau and will be on display at the fair.
Butterfly Release slated Saturday at Breezy Point
BREEZY POINT - The third annual Butterfly Release will be held at Pelican Woods Cemetery and Nature Trail in Breezy Point at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
This year's theme, "Sunshine on My Shoulder," is a reminder that butterflies inspire hope. Bring a lawnchair to enjoy the program.
Members of the Pequot Lakes American Legion Post 49 Color Guard will begin the program, with brief comments by Elaine Jablonski, author and local business owner. Musical selections will be performed by Barbara Sjoblad and Ed Koehler.
Names of all those to be honored will be read and 100 butterflies will be released over the wildflower meadow.
To dedicate a butterfly for $25, make a check payable to Pelican Woods Cemetery and drop it off at Breezy Point City Hall, 8361 County Road 11.

Aitkin airport to receive federal grant
AITKIN - The Aitkin Municipal-Steve Kurtz Field was one of five airports to receive federal grants from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Sen. Norm Coleman's office reported that the Aitkin airport would receive $418,00 to acquire land, construct an apron, rehabilitate the access road and a runway and update the airport master plan study.
