12-piece band to perform at Commander
BREEZY POINT - Twelve-piece Twin Cities dance band High and Mighty will perform from 9:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday at the Commander Bar in Breezy Point.
With a four-piece horn section, five-piece rhythm section and five-part vocal harmonies, High and Mighty has performed at many Minnesota clubs and festivals.
The band's playlist ranges from Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind and Fire to Beyonce and Alicia Keys.
Half Steps quartet to perform in Staples
STAPLES - The Half Steps, a male a cappella quartet from St. Cloud, will perform in the Music in the Park series at 7 p.m. Sunday at Northern Pacific Park in Staples.
Admission is free.
The Half Steps' repertoire includes everything from "Book of Love" to an ABBA medley that touches on 13 songs in seven minutes. The group also sings classics such as "That's Amore" and "It's Now or Never."
The original four members are in their 12th year together. They include Charlie Opatz, baritone; Richard Witteman, tenor; Gary Zwack, bass; and Paul Fedor, lead.

Lykins to perform cello recital Aug. 10
NISSWA - Brainerd High School graduate Scott Lykins will perform a cello recital at 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa. Cathy Taylor will accompany on piano.
Admission is free. Donations to Music Matters, which raises funds for the Brainerd School District music program, are welcome.
The program will include works by Bach, Beethoven, Shostakovich and Aaron J. Kernis.
Lykins began cello studies at age 12 with Grant Wilcox in the Brainerd School District orchestra program. Lykins is a senior at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., where he is pursuing his bachelor's of music in cello performance. He has performed with several orchestras across the country.
'Eye 2 Eye' rescheduled for Aug. 29 at CLC
"Eye 2 Eye," the Elton John/Billy Joel tribute show that was canceled in April, has been rescheduled for 6 and 9 p.m. Aug. 29 at Central Lakes College's Chalberg Theatre in Brainerd.
Tickets are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors 55 and older and children 12 and younger.
Holders of the April tickets can trade in those for the new shows by mailing the tickets to the CLC Theatre Box Office, 501 W. College Drive, Brainerd, MN, 56401. The box office phone number is 855-8199. Hours are 1-4 p.m. weekdays.
Neil Sedaka to perform at casino
ONAMIA - Pop/rock pioneer Neil Sedaka will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5-6 at the Grand Casino Mille Lacs Events & Convention Center north of Onamia.
Tickets, priced at $30 and $36, are available at the box office or through Ticketmaster at (651) 989-5151 or www.grandcasinomn.com.
Sedaka broke through in the formative years of rock 'n' roll with hits such as "Calendar Girl," "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" and "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen."
Sedaka has authored more than 1,000 songs, including hits for the Fifth Dimension, The Monkees and Tom Jones.
Groneberg is next organist in series
Bonnie Groneberg will perform in the Summer Organ Series at noon Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church, 9th and Juniper, in Brainerd.
Admission is free.
Groneberg is music director at St. Francis. She plays for three Masses each Sunday, directs and accompanies the church's adult choir and plays piano and French horn in numerous ensembles, including the Heartland Symphony, Central Lakes Brass, Central Lakes Community Band and piano with El Nino - a big band/swing band.

Hendricksson to speak at library
John Hendricksson, author of "The Gunflint Trail" series, will speak at noon Monday at the Brainerd Public Library as part of the Brown Bag Speakers' Series.
Admission is free; visitors may bring a bag lunch.
Hendricksson, 81, has written about the natural and cultural history of northern Minnesota for 50 years in newspapers, magazines and books.
"The Gunflint Cabin: A Northwoods Memoir" is the third book in his trilogy about the Gunflint Trail. This memoir recounts the last 28 years at his Gunflint Lake cabin. He includes stories of the wildlife, neighbors, visitors and recent wind and wildfire disasters.
Hendrickson and his wife, Julie, have lived in their Gunflint Lake cabin five months out of the year since 1980. They live in White Bear Lake the rest of the year.

Programs offered at Staples library
STAPLES - The Staples Public Library is offering the following programs as part of the "Look What's Cookin'" summer reading program.
¥ Teen Pizza Party, 6-8 p.m. Thursday, library. Teens may play games at the library, and Tower and Giovanni's will deliver pizza. The attendance limit is 25 and pre-registration is required.
¥ Let's Have a Picnic, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, city park. Visitors can enjoy water games along with barbecued hot dogs on the grill, beans, potato chips, s'mores and Kool-Aid.

Book features landscapes photographed from above
RHINEBECK, N.Y. - Minnesota-born photographer and author Maxwell MacKenzie's book, "Markings," is now available from Bergamot Books.
The 96-page coffee table book features 45 color photos of Minnesota farm fields. It is available for $40 from www.bergamotbooks.net.
MacKenzie flew a motorized parachute that resembles an old-fashioned bicycle. Steering and shooting from a hand-held Nikon, he spent three years flying over farm fields at heights of 30 to 1,000 feet. Because he flew lower and slower (26 mph) than an airplane, his photographs offer a unique perspective.
MacKenzie lives and works in Washington.
MacKenzie will sign books from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Borealis Books, 119 Jefferson St. S., in Wadena.
Hellen an editor of 'New Voices'
BEMIDJI - Jade Hellen, Pine River, is an editor for Bemidji State University's "New Voices" anthology of poetry and prose written by high school students.
Hellen is a junior majoring in creative and professional writing. He served on the prose editorial board.

13 artists featured at JAC exhibit
AITKIN - Thirteen artists painted scenes from around Aitkin as part of a contest last week, and their work will be on display through Aug. 16 at the Jaques Art Center.
Winners and prizes:
Best in Show - "Yesterday's Daisy Field" by Marva Harms, $400.
Second place - "Storm's Coming" by Kristen Grevich, $200.
First place, Nocturne Paint Out - "Mosquito Lily" by Kristen Grevich, $150.

Poepping's work on display at Porthole Gallery
"Cocoon," a series of paintings by Michaela Poepping of Lino Lakes, will be on display from Monday through Aug. 30 at the Porthole Gallery, 712 Washington St., in Brainerd.
A reception will be from 3-5 p.m. Aug. 16.
The artist states: "Conceptually, these works explore the ideas of regression, self-protection and the difficulty of breaking free once this barrier has been built. Simply, I am interested in the physical and psychological contortions brought about by emotional distress."
Poepping is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and holds a bachelor's of fine arts in drawing and painting. Her works have been shown in Minneapolis, St. Cloud and Brainerd.
Rug hooking school scheduled Aug. 1
CROSSLAKE - The seventh annual Northern Lights Rug Hooking School will be Wednesday through Aug. 1 at the Crosslake Lutheran Church.
Rug hookers from across the U.S. will attend this three-day class that features three nationally known instructors.
Rug hooking is a growing fiber art in which the hooker creates rugs and other object with wool fiber.
The public is invited to a rug show from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 1 to view completed works and to vote for their show favorite. Rug hookers and other fiber artists also will be able to purchase supplies from vendors at that time.
