Monday night was a dream come true for Ingrid Anderson, owner of the Swedish Timber House in Lake Shore. Anderson, originally of Leksand, Sweden, celebrated the culmination of a nine-month effort to join Brainerd and Leksand as sister cities.
30 years ago (1978)
Rudy Hillig received the "Citizen of the Month" award from the Citizen State Bank. Rudy operates a gardening and nursery center in the Brainerd area and has become known to residents for his willingness to share his knowledge of plants and gardening with them.
40 years ago (1968)
Some 13 Brainerd men will leave Brainerd at 3 p.m. tomorrow for a 10-mile run to Crow Wing State Park as part of a physical fitness program.
60 years ago (1948)
Boys' softball will be played tomorrow morning at the Fill. Hardball is on the roster for the youngsters Saturday. Ray Bennett, YMCA secretary is in charge of the program.
80 years ago (1928)
Never has Crow Wing County had better crop weather than at present. A visit in the country shows corn doing well, potatoes have a few buds in sight, all growing luxuriantly, alfalfa growing well and grasses giving every indication of a big hay crop.
100 years ago (1908)
A steamer was stopped in the mouth of the river owing to a dense fog. An old lady inquired of the captain the cause of the delay.
"I can't see up the river," replied the captain.
"But I can see the stars overhead," continued the old lady.
"Yes, but until the boilers bust, we ain't a going that way."
