Riverwood to launch breast health program with $100,000 grant
The Brainerd lakes affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure recently awarded Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin the largest grant in its nine-year history.
Riverwood applied for and received a grant for $100,000 for a Nurse Navigator program to launch a community outreach program to promote breast health services and detection of breast cancer among Aitkin County and area residents. The Nurse Navigator program at Riverwood, a model for breast health that is being used in other health-care systems, will be staffed by a registered nurse care coordinator to be hired in the next month or so.
The nurse navigator will serve as the primary point of contact for patients diagnosed with breast cancer and at-risk populations for breast cancer in Aitkin County and nearby communities. The ultimate goal is to improve access to breast cancer screenings by assessing current access and identifying and improving barriers to access.
