Walter Marquardt
BACKUS - Walter Edward "Wally" Marquardt, age 87, of Backus, and formerly of Elysian, Minn., died on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at St. Cloud Heart Center.
Walter was born May 14, 1922, in Janesville, Minn. He was raised on a farm near Smiths Mill, Minn. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and attended school in nearby Elysian. He served two years with the CCCs in northern Minnesota. In 1942 he married Viola Ruth Hays and they set up residence in Elysian. While in Elysian, he was an active member in the fire department, Businessmen's Association and community activities. Wally was sole proprietor of Marquardt Trucking for over 38 years. After retiring from trucking, he and Viola moved to Boy River, Minn. While living in Boy River he worked as a school custodian and drove school bus until he retired. He was heavily involved in community activities and served as the Boy River mayor for several years. Wally and Vi's final residence was in Backus.
Wally always enjoyed the company of people and has left a very large trail of friends.
Along with those friends he is missed and survived by two sons, Lee (Rhonda) Marquardt, of Pelican Rapids, and Richard (Darlene) Marquardt, of Backus; seven grandchildren, Darren, Duane, Tracy, Troy, Eric, Randee and Marshall; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy; wife, Viola; and son, Walter Jr. Arrangements are with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
