Higby wins Wally at BIR
When Wally Higby crossed the finish line July 20 to win the Pro class at Brainerd International Raceway, 78 other drag racers were probably somewhere between disgusted and amazed.
Higby, of Maple Grove, won the Pro class on Saturday and Sunday, outlasting the other 78 drag racers in the field.
Last weekend BIR hosted the third race in its five-race O'Reilly Auto Parts/Snap-On Tools Bracket Drag Racing Series. This race was BIR's second double-race weekend, meaning Saturday and Sunday were individual racing days that included qualifying, elimination rounds and class champions. It also meant that racers had twice as many chances to earn points.
Higby, driving his 1969 Nova, disposed of Travis Hjelle of Strandquist in the final round after running a time of 11.246 seconds at 112.73 mph. On Sunday, Higby defeated Andy Schmall of Lino Lakes, who fouled at the starting line.
KC Brager of Pillager found herself in the finals both days in the Street Trophy class. With 14 cars in the class, she won Saturday's final in a '65 Barracuda by beating Jake Elzy of Lindstrom.
On Sunday, it was an all-Pillager final, with Brager facing off with Andy Knebel and his '71 Cutlass. Knebel beat him off the starting line and never looked back, winning with a time of 15.142 seconds and 82.22 mph.
Sunday's finals came with a bonus for the winners. It was the National Dragster Challenge Ð a race within a race. Up for grabs were six Wally trophies. Named after NHRA founder Wally Parks, a Wally is a coveted trophy among drag racers because they're also awarded to drivers who win on the NHRA Nationals series circuit.
The next race at Brainerd International Raceway is the 27th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals Aug. 7-10.
