If not for Rudy Hillig, director of the Paul Bunyan Arboretum, development of the new Brainerd Dispatch building might have wiped out a stand of rare penstemon flowers. Hillig transplanted the prairie flowers to the Arb before construction began.

(Photo) One of the largest bass of the year was caught by Robert Sarna of Alexandria out of Rabbit Lake. It weighed in at 8-4 and measured 24 inches in length. He landed it on a Jitterbug lure.
40 years ago (1969)
Brainerd's American Legion baseball team, a 9-0 victor here earlier on a one-hitter by Dennis Brown, scored twice in the first frame and held on for a 2-1 win at Walker as Gordie Johnson hurled a no-hitter.
60 years ago (1949)
(Photo) This monster, four-engine B-17 Flying Fortress is the first of its kind ever to land or take off from a Brainerd airport. The big plane was brought here Sunday from Omaha for the airshow and was viewed by thousands in attendance.
80 years ago (1929)
Crow Wing County Sheriff Claus Theorin says a 17-year-old Avon farm boy has confessed to the robbery of the Fort Ripley Post Office and general store. The boy will also be charged with attempted robbery of the St. Stephen State Bank.
100 years ago (1909)
The fish car Glenwood came up today from the state hatchery with a load of brook trout fry. George Hess and John Cochran received 30 cans, of which twenty went into Pillager Creek and ten into Whiteley Creek.
