Bracket season reaches halfway point at BIR
DRAG RACING
When last weekend ended for bracket drag racer Jack MacFarlane of Aitkin he had two first-place finishes, a semifinal finish and a coveted Wally trophy.

"It was a once-in-a-lifetime weekend," MacFarlane said.

MacFarlane and his 1982 Mustang were dialed in all weekend during Brainerd International Raceway's Bracket Drag Racing Series event, where about 300 drivers competed.

Saturday's action first featured elimination rounds from the third race in the series, which was postponed June 26 because of rain. After completing that race, racers qualified for the fourth race, with elimination rounds taking place Sunday.

On Saturday, MacFarlane won the Pro class and lost in the semifinals of the Super Pro class. On Sunday, he lost in the first round of Pro class eliminations but avenged his semifinal loss in Super Pro by winning the class and earning a Wally trophy. Wallys are typically awarded at the national level, but this race was BIR's National Dragster Challenge, which gives bracket racers a chance at a Wally once a year. It was the first Wally MacFarlane has ever won.

"I was doing the best I could," MacFarlane said. "To win, you have to have a lucky round in there, one where you won when you should've lost. I had those, too."

MacFarlane benefited from a starting-line foul in the semifinals of the Pro class Saturday, giving him a free pass to face Dave Engler of Ramsey in the finals, where MacFarlane won decisively.

In the Sportsman class, Don Wachholz of Mayer fouled at the starting line, giving Chuck Fenstra of Crosby the finals win.

In the Super Group finals, Andy Knebel of Pillager beat Ali Hieb of Maple Grove in the finals of Street Trophy.

On Sunday, 80 drivers competed in Super Pro, but MacFarlane outlasted them all, finishing with a win over Tim Hallberg of Champlin, who fouled at the starting line in the finals.

The fifth race in the seven-race series is Aug. 22-23.
