Jones named CFO of Northway Construction
BAXTER - Wendy Jones has been named chief financial officer of Northway Construction Services in Baxter.
Jones has been with the firm since its inception in 2006, with responsibility for the accounting and human resources functions.
Before joining Northway, Jones was a regional consultant for BISYS Retirement Services.
Jones earned a B.A. in accounting from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, and she has completed coursework toward an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She also holds a B.A. in sports management and marketing from Minnesota State University Mankato.
Metz completes recertification
Northern Orthopedics, Brainerd, announced Dr. Christopher Metz successfully completed the 2009 Recertification Examination and fulfilled all of the requirements of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Physicians certificated by the ABOS have met specified educational, evaluation, and examination requirements of the board.
MMFCU names Borden business services director
BAXTER - Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union recently expanded its Business Services Department naming David Borden as director.
Borden's background in the financial services industry spans more than 20 years and includes experience in commercial lending and investment banking. Borden is based out of the Baxter office.
Former Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union business services director, Julie Hofius, will remain on staff as a business services lending specialist.
Physician assistant joins Lakewood
STAPLES - Mary Lamusga, physician assistant, has joined the Lakewood Health System medical staff.
Lamusga previously practiced as a physician assistant at the Blue Earth Medical Center in Mankato. She has 10 years of experience as a physician assistant and 21 years experience as a nurse. Lamusga increases the number of physician assistants to six.
Lamusga finished her physician assistant education at the University of North Dakota in 1999. She is a member of the Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants and a board member of MAPA.
Cowell attends Northwestern mutual meeting
BAXTER - David Cowell, a financial adviser with Northwestern Mutual, was one of more than 10,000 people to attend the company's 2009 annual meeting in Milwaukee.
Medical students find summer internships
STAPLES - Two medical students from the University of Minnesota have chosen Lakewood Health System, Staples, for elective summer internships.
Dan Freeman, originally from Staples, and Jennifer Patterson, originally from Wadena, will join Lakewood Health System for the summer months.
Freeman attends the University of Minnesota, Duluth and plans to graduate from medical school in 2012. His interest is in rural practice.
Patterson is a medical student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus and also plans to graduate in 2012. She expects her schooling and internships to form her interest in a specialty. Patterson has already spent time at the Care Center, Lakewood Reflections, Emergency Department and plans to shadow a number of specialists including a chiropractor and dental surgeon.
In addition to medical internships, Lakewood offers opportunities for high-school-age and professional/administrative students to learn hands on. Each year, Lakewood Health System also hosts a medical student for the Rural Physician Associate Program.

Hautala wins first place in photo competition
Aaron W. Hautala's single entry of Sauna night in Helsinki was awarded first place in the single image category at the Picturing 2009 Photographic Competition as hosted by FocalPoint and The Crossing Arts Alliance at the Franklin Arts Center in Brainerd.
Sauna night in Helsinki is one of thousands of pictures Hautala has captured while on world-wide photographic assignment through the University of Minnesota Press for the upcoming coffee table book The Opposite of Cold - Sauna's of the Lake Superior Region to be published fall of 2010.
The book focuses on the origins of the Finnish sauna, and the introduction of the sauna to the states and countries surrounding Lake Superior.
Businessman organizes international competition
Area business owner AJ Lutter announced he is putting on his first international competition this September.
The chainsaw sculptor and owner of Come See What I Saw near Brainerd, and Ross Olsen, owner of Flying Squirrel in Hackensack, host the Golden Chainsaw Sculpting Championships Sept. 24-27 on Olsen's property, ArtisTREE Fields three miles south of Hackensack.
The plan was to invite winners from carving events to come to Minnesota, and for the past four years, winning carvers have come from the U.S. to compete for the Golden Chainsaw. This year, two winning carvers from Toei, Japan make it an international event.
Two of this year's competitors will come from a new competition being held in Park Rapids during Legends & Logging Days, Aug. 7-8.
There will be a total of 10 carvers competing for $15,000 in prizes and the Golden Chainsaw trophy for the best masterpiece carving at the September championship. Visitors can also watch quick carve and other special events, shop at the artisan village and food court and purchase carvings at auctions on Saturday and Sunday.

Tour showcases Brainerd business opportunities
Real estate agents and property owners will work together through the Brainerd Main Street program to highlight the spaces in Brainerd's Central Business District using a self-guided tour Tuesday.
The tour of commercial spaces that are for lease, rent, or sale if from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday. To begin the self- guided tour, a tour guide is available at the Brainerd Lakes Chamber office, 124 N. Sixth St. Participants may visit at many or as few properties as they like between 5-6:30 p.m. Though the tour is free, participants are asked to register in advance by contacting Emily at 822-7126.
The goal of this tour is to give more exposure to vacant commercial properties in the Central Business District and to help fill the vacancies.
The entire community is invited to visit stops along the tour. During the tour, a knowledgeable person will be at each stop to answer questions.

Cub Foods wins Everett Lassig Award
The Everett Lassig award, which is given to individuals and groups that have made outstanding contributions to support the Confidence Learning Center through annual camp fundraising event, was given to the Cub Foods Stores, owned by the Steve Quisberg family.
Everett Lassig was one of the early organizers and supporters of the Celebrity Golf Tournament.
The highlight of the Mariucci Fiesta is the awarding of two special yearly honors. Chris Quisberg was on hand to accept the award for his family.
Cub Foods has been donating the food that serves the anglers, the golfers, the volunteers and the friends of camp who attend the Friday night Fiesta at Confidence Learning Center for the past eight years.
Cub Foods sends out what is needed to feed 700-1,000 people. In eight years, that has amounted to about 1,600 pounds of flour and about 6,400 people served. Other items on the menu include a variety of Italian dishes, fresh vegetables and home-made deep fried veggies, Gary Loge's famous fish fry, foccaccia bread and desert. The baking is also done at Cub Foods.
This annual fundraiser continues to provide an ample share of the 10-12,000 camper days provided each year by Confidence Learning Center. The Classic Golf Tournament, Fishing Tournament and Mariucci Fiesta raise from $70,000 to $100,000 a year.
Integra Telecom named Mitel's No. 1 dealer
BAXTER - Integra Telecom, with offices in Baxter, was named Mitel's number one dealer for the company's U.S. region at its 2009 Business Partner Forum in June.
Mitel provides business communication solutions and applications for organizations. The award is based on Integra's 2008 Mitel product and service purchase volume. Integra is one of more than 600 Mitel authorized partners in the U.S. eligible to receive the award. Intega has earned the top-ranked position for seven years in a row.
Edward Jones ranks highest investor satisfaction
According to J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Full Service Investor Satisfaction Study, for the fourth year out of the past five, financial-services firm Edward Jones ranks highest in investor satisfaction with full service brokerage firms, announced Laurie Fitterer of Edward Jones in Nisswa.
Edward Jones ranked highest in investor satisfaction by J.D. Power and Associates in 2005, 2006 and 2007, and highest in 2002 in a tie, when the study began. Edward Jones in Canada also twice ranked highest in the J.D. Power and Associates Canadian Full Service Investor Satisfaction Study.
Thrivent Financial gains distinction
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has been included among the 2009 Ward's 50 Top Performing Insurance Companies.
The list was released July 9 by Ward Group, an operational consulting firm and provider of benchmarking services to the insurance industry.
Of more than 800 life-health insurance companies analyzed in the survey, Thrivent Financial was placed among the top 50. Each Ward's 50 company passed all safety and consistency screens and achieved superior performance over the five-year period of analysis.
Thrivent Financial also was selected one of the top 15 companies for women 2009 by PINK magazine. Thrivent reports it is the only Minnesota-based company to have received this recognition.
WORKSHOPS
Food manager training planned at CLC
A Certified Food Manager course is planned from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 12 and Aug. 13 in the Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College, Brainerd.
Certification is required in most Minnesota food establishments.
The class meets with instructor Colette Pohlkamp.
The course fee is $160.

'Going Into Business' class planned Aug. 20
Going Into Business For Yourself will be offered from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Business and Industry Center on the campus of Central Lakes College, Brainerd.
Tuition is $49 per person plus $29 for each additional business partner. Instructor is Jay Bock.
Deadline to register is Aug. 13.
