Mayor Don O'Brien told the Baxter City Council it will have to find ways to protect a corridor for the proposed Brainerd 371 bypass.

30 years ago (1979)

Tuesday's crowd at the Crow Wing County Fair was the second largest in history, with 23,500 people passing through the gates.

40 years ago (1969)

A 26-year-old Minneapolis man was felled by a barrage of gunfire from two deputies as he and two other men ran from the Deerwood Sports Shop, which they were burglarizing. The two who escaped were believed wounded and one carried a pistol.

60 years ago (1949)

Three chain grocery stores lost another round in their battle to become licensed retailers of off-sale 3.2 beer in Brainerd. The council rejected the applications of the local A & P, Red Owl and National Tea Co.

80 years ago (1929)

One hundred men were fighting 21 brush fires in the Brainerd district according to Forest Ranger E.H. Rhodes, who blamed the current drought. Farm buildings were saved by fast work at a farm in St. Mathias.

100 years ago (1909)

Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Mattes, of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, arrived in the city from Minneapolis with their little daughter Alice. She was sick with typhoid fever, having taken ill on the train. She is being treated by Dr. Thabes and is improving.
