LOCAL BRIEFS
Meetings scheduled for public input
The Mississippi Headwaters Board will host two public input meetings to invite input/feedback from the general public on how the board has and will continue to meet its responsibility to protect and enhance the Mississippi River and related shoreland as required by Minnesota statute. The two public meetings will serve as an avenue to gather public opinion on board effectiveness. The public is invited and encouraged to attend these meetings as valuable input will assist the board in its requirement to update/amend every five years its comprehensive plan that is currently being drafted.

The first public meeting will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Crow Wing Judicial Center at 231 Laurel St. in Brainerd. The other meeting is in Bemidji. Comments/input may be made to the Mississippi Headwaters Board office at 218 Washburn Ave. East, Backus, MN 56435 by Wednesday.

Contact the MHB office for more information by calling (218) 947-7524.

Farmers' markets will feature chef demonstrations

Farmers' Market Week extends through Friday. To help celebrate, the University of Minnesota Pine and Lake Country Local Foods group is kicking off its chef demonstrations at farmers' markets in Brainerd and Baxter.

Cooking demonstrations will be conducted at several central Minnesota markets in August. Chef Chad Minor will lead the demonstrations, showing attendees how to prepare many of the seasonal foods that can be purchased at the markets. He'll also have recipes to give away, along with samples of his food creations.

The demonstrations are a way of promoting farmers' markets and providing information to consumers of the benefits of purchasing and eating fresh, locally grown products.

In Brainerd, the chef demonstration will be Tuesday at the Franklin Arts School on East Washington. In Baxter, the demonstration will be Friday at the Gander Mountain parking lot on Highway 371. Farmers' markets are open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
