WHAT'S DOING
American Legion dinner
Swiss steak will be served from 5:30 p.m. until gone Thursday at the Brainerd American Legion. Cost is $8.

Lakes Area Dance Club

The Lakes Area Dance Club is holding its monthly dance on Friday at Spirit Horse Center located at 8386 50th Ave., Brainerd, (the second level). It is one mile south of North Central Speedway on Highway 371. The dance lesson will feature the swing with review of other dances beginning at 6:30 p.m. General dancing will be from 7:30-9 p.m.

The cost of the dance will be $5 for members, $10 for non-members and $2 for students with a current ID.

Rollin' Rangers

AKELEY - The August meeting for the Rollin' Rangers will be Aug. 16-19 at Akeley Campgrounds. Hosts will be Jim and Judy Hartman and Denny and Karel House. Any questions, call Karen at 829-8918.

Disabled American Veterans meeting

The monthly meeting for DAV Crow Wing County Chapter No. 22 and Auxiliary will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the Brainerd VFW Club. Chapter 22 officers meeting will be 6 p.m.

Pinetree Patchworkers

Pinetree Patchworkers are having its annual picnic at 6:45 p.m. Monday at Northland Arboretum. Members should bring $2, a dish to share and their Challenge Quilt project. There will be a humorous and entertaining panel discussion of "The Men Who Live with Quilters." Anyone interested in quilting is invited to attend this meeting.

Ovarian cancer support group

NISSWA - The next ovarian cancer support group meeting is planned from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Adirondack Coffee Shop in the upper level meeting room, 25503 Main St., Nisswa. The meeting, sponsored by the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance, is free and family members and friends are invited. Pre-registration is encouraged. WHS class of 1941

WHS class of 1941 will meet for lunch at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at The Chap.

Brainerd Garden Club

Brainerd Garden Club will meet at 1 p.m. Friday at the Northland Arboretum. Final plans will be made for the September fall conference to be held in Little Falls.

Marya Hornbacher to speak

Marya Hornbacher is a nationally known author from Minneapolis and recipient of a host of awards for journalism. She will speak at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), North Central Region, support meeting from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Our Place, 606 Front St., Brainerd.

Hornbacher is the author of "Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia." Hornbacher's new memoir "Madness: A Life" tells about the difficulties and promise of living with mental illness.

Arts in the Garden planned

Arts in the Garden is planned for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 15 at Good Samaritan-Bethany Healing Garden, 804 Wright St., Brainerd. Highlights include Encore Arts Association artists, guided garden tours, children's activities, garden swing rides, guitarist Jim Olsen, a plant sale and refreshments.

DAV/DAVA picnic planned

DAV and DAVA members and prospective members are invited to attend a picnic Friday at Buffalo Hills Park in Brainerd. Hamburgers, brats, and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. Bring a dish to share. There is no fee to pay and no alcoholic beverages may be served at this Brainerd City park. For questions call Tim or Kathy Brastrup at 829-3420.

Breast cancer survivor group

The Breast Cancer Survivor Support Group will have an additional evening meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Medical Center in the Joseph Room. Tricia Wiewel, a pharmacist at Service Drug, will speak about healthy supplements for women surviving a cancer diagnosis. All women surviving breast cancer or other women's cancers are invited to attend. Food is available for purchase in the River Room Cafeteria. The regular meeting will be 11:30 a.m. Friday also in the Joseph Room at SJMC.

WHS class of 1937

The Washington High School class of 1937 will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Northwind Grille.

Senior dances

Senior dances will be 1-4 p.m. Tuesday at Motley with music by Helen, Gary and Don; and from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday at Waukenabo with music by Helen, Gary and Don.

VFW upcoming events

The VFW Post and Auxiliary monthly meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the home post, 309 South Sixth St., Brainerd.

VFW Men's Auxiliary will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the VFW club room.

Cribbage is played at 6 p.m. every Tuesday at the VFW.

The fish fry dinner will be served from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday at the VFW.

Class of 1952

The class of 1952 will meet at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bonanza for lunch.

Retired Firemen to meet

Retired firemen, spouses and widows will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Wings Airport Cafe.

Baxter Lions Club

The Baxter Lions Club will meet Monday at Camp Vanasek. Board meeting is at 6 p.m. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and the regular meeting is called to order by President Babe Clifford at 7 p.m.

'Cooking safely for a crowd' sessions planned

GARRISON - The University of Minnesota Extension Office will present "Cooking Safely for a Crowd" with two sessions on Aug. 19 at Light of the Cross Lutheran Church in Garrison. Session one will be 1-4 p.m. and session two will be from 6-9 p.m.

Cost is $15 per participant. Make checks payable to the University of Minnesota. Registration deadline is Wednesday. Mail registration and check to Diane Durbin, Light of the Cross Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 353, Garrison, MN 56450 or call (320) 692-4773 for more information.
