CAREER
Larson is family service worker

Janelle Larson, originally from the St. Cloud area, has been named Family Service Worker at Bridges of Hope, a faith-based nonprofit organization that helps families in need by providing parent support services and by connecting them to area social service, mental health and faith community resources.

Larson graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in sociology. She has experience working with the Bethany Crisis Nursery in Duluth, which is a program through Lutheran Social Services.

Lelwica joins Northern Orthopedics

Dr. Amy E. Lelwica will join Northern Orthopedics, Brainerd, on Aug. 28.

Lelwica will practice general orthopedics with a special interest in shoulder arthroscopy and arthroplasty. Lelwica completed her undergraduate degrees in exercise science and nutrition from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul. She then attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth Medical School and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities School of Medicine where she obtained her medical degree. She completed her orthopaedic residency at the University of Minnesota this spring.

She will be working in partnership with her father, Dr. Peter Schmitz, who founded Northern Orthopedics in 1975.

Lakewood adds staff members

STAPLES - With the recent grand opening of the Medical Marketplace store front at Lakewood Health System, new staff members have been added: Tracy Gaffke, home medical equipment coordinator, and Cab Nixon, durable medical equipment technician.

Fromm receives promotion to unit manager

Maxine Fromm, licensed practical nurse, recently was promoted to unit manager of Assisted Living Services for Edgewood Vista Senior Living of Brainerd.

Tomberlin gains promotion as designer

Shirley Tomberlin, Brainerd, designer with the home decor company Home & Garden Party, was recently promoted to gold designer.

To reach this goal, Tomberlin needed to sponsor three team members and monthly sales of $300 or more.

St. Joseph's Medical Center laboratory achieves accreditation

The St. Joseph's Medical Center Laboratory has been awarded an accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists, based on the results of a recent on-site inspection.

The lab has been congratulated for the "excellence of services being provided."

During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory's records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff's qualifications, the laboratory's equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory. This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for the laboratory's patients.

Habitat hosts Friday Morning Coffee

LITTLE FALLS - Friday Morning Coffee, the networking event of the Chamber of Commerce, Little Falls, is planned from 7:30-9 a.m. Aug. 15 at the chamber, 200 First St. N.W.

Chamber members, employees and guests are welcome to attend. Announcements and introductions will be at 8:15 a.m. Hosting this month is Habitat For Humanity.

Sviggum seeks input on worker compensation reforms

LITTLE FALLS - Steve Sviggum, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, is seeking input from the business community about reforming workers' compensation in Minnesota.

Sviggum will be available from 8-9 a.m. Aug. 19 at the Chamber of Commerce, 200 First St. N.W., Little Falls.

After last year's workers' comp reform bill failed, the Department of Labor and Industry has been seeking input from insurers, employers and employees to conceive new ways to improve Minnesota's workers' compensation system. Following a 20-minute presentation, Sviggum will open the topic for discussion with a 40-minute question and answer session. No RSVP is needed.

Operation Round Up donations distributed

The Crow Wing Power Community Trust Board donated more than $44,000 to local community programs during their third quarter meeting held in July.

Operation Round-Up funds were distributed to the following projects: $1,500 to Kids Voting, Brainerd; $1,000 to Legionville School Patrol Camp, Brainerd; $600 to American Red Cross, Blood Drive, Brainerd; $3,000 to Crisis Line and Referral Service, Brainerd; $3,000 to Paul Bunyan Nature Learning Center, Brainerd; $2,000 to Fishing Has No Boundaries, Brainerd; $3,000 to Youth Investment, Timber Bay, Nisswa; $1,500 to Family Links, Brainerd; $1,700 to Brainerd Public Library; $3,450 to Pine River First Responders; $2,500 to Cuyuna Range Youth Center, Crosby; $250 to Child Care Choices, Reason for Hope Retreat; $175 to Morrison County Youth Safety Course; $2,000 to Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity, Brainerd; $500 to Let's Go Fishing With Seniors, Little Falls; $2,000 to Advocates Against Domestic Abuse; $1,894 to Lutheran Social Service, Brain Injury Program, Brainerd; $1,500 to Trailside Center, Pequot Lakes; $500 to Garrison Fire and Rescue; $1,000 to Northern Pines Mental Health, Brainerd; $3,000 to Northland Area Family Service Center, Longville; $1,500 to Crosslake Community School; $1,000 to Riverside Elementary School, Brainerd; $1,000 to Emily Charter School; $500 to Eagle View Elementary, Pequot Lakes; $3,000 to Pine River/Backus Family Center; $800 to Pequot Lakes School District and $1,000 to Private Cooperative Member Crisis Medical Support.

Operation Round Up is funded by participating members of Crow Wing Power who allow the cooperative to round up their electric bills to the nearest whole dollar. The additional change is pooled and distributed quarterly. Since the program's inception in late 1996, Round Up has donated nearly $1,500,000 to community projects and programs in Cass, Crow Wing and Morrison counties.

The next quarterly meeting is scheduled for Oct. 23. Grant forms can be obtained by calling Crow Wing Power at 829-2827 or (800) 648-9401 or at www.cwpower.com. The deadline for grant applications is Oct. 10.

AWARD

Kinship Partners receives grant award

Kinship Partners of the Brainerd Lakes Area was awarded a $1,000 grant from the York Children's Foundation of Pittsburgh for its youth mentoring program in Crow Wing and southern Cass counties. These funds will be used to help offset programming costs due to last year's successful "100 Mentors 100 Days" mentor recruitment campaign.

Kinship was nominated for the grant by Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home of Brainerd. Steve Wardrip, Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home, presented the check to David Downing, Kinship Partners executive director.

CORRECTION

In a business news note on Aug. 3, information about Kasey Kuhlenbeck should have said she owns her own nutrition and fitness consulting business. The note said she owned her own personal training business.
