Freedom Salute ceremony honors soldiers at Camp Ripley
CAMP RIPLEY - The Minnesota National Guard is hosting a Freedom Salute ceremony for about 80 soldiers from F Company, 134th Brigade Support Battalion Sunday (today) at Camp Ripley.
Plans call for the 80 soldiers to receive Freedom Salute awards in recognition of their service with the 1/34th Brigade Combat Team in Iraq.
The soldiers of F Company were mobilized for active duty in October 2005. They deployed March 2006 as part of the 2,600 soldiers of the Minnesota Army National Guard's 1st Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In January 2007, their tour was extended by an additional 125 days, making them part of the longest-serving military unit in the global war on terror, with nearly 16 months in a combat zone and a total of 22 months deployed.
National Guards from all states and territories conduct Freedom Salute ceremonies to give official recognition to soldiers in National Guard units who have served overseas.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Camp Ripley Recreation Center at Camp Ripley.
