The Paul Bunyan Cyclists Brainerd area bike club will dedicate Aug. 22 as a day to ride all or any part of the Paul Bunyan Train in honor of Terry McGaughey, for his efforts in helping to create the trail system.
There is no costs and nor formal organization. Participants can choose any section of the trail to ride.
"The bike club hopes that all who ride the trail will keep in mind the efforts made to provide and maintain this important asset to our community," said Emily Lanin, bike club board member."
In 2010, the last 50 miles of the Paul Bunyan Trail from Walker to Bemidji will be completed. Soon to be paved as well is the seven-mile stretch from Brainerd-Baxter to Crow Wing State Park along the Mississippi River. When the trail is finished, bikers will be able to ride through north country scenery and 16 rural communities along the more than 100 mile linear parkway.
NHRA Fanfest scheduled
The NHRA Fanfest is scheduled from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Westgate Mall in Brainerd.
Fans will have a chance to meet drivers, get autographs and watch NHRA techs check out cars.
The event will end with a convoy of cars and trucks leaving the mall for Brainerd International Raceway.
PL grad signs at Weber International
Charlie Hollinbeck of Pequot Lakes has signed to play golf this season for Weber International University in Florida.
Hollinbeck was a member of the Pequot Lakes Patriots boys' golf team that finished runner-up the last two seasons in the Section 6-2A tournament.
Hollinbeck was also a member of the Northern Lakes hockey team.
Residents' daughter sets records
Lori Clark of Longview, Wash., daughter of Betty and Marty Ehrhardt of Merrifield participated in the National Senior Games Aug. 1-5 held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.
Clark, 54, set three national records for her age group. They came in the 50-meter freestyle, 100 individual medley and the 50 butterfly. She also won the 50 backstroke, placed second in the 100 backstroke and was third in the 200 backstroke.
