Man High events
The Man High celebration in Crosby Saturday and Sunday will provide a weekend of events, including a workshop on pain management and a symposium - that includes an Apollo astronaut - on space travel of the past and future.

¥ The pilot of Man High II, retired Air Force Lt. Col. David Simons, a medical doctor and researcher, plans to attend.

¥ Crosslake area metal artist Jeff Kreitz is creating an interactive replica of the space capsule used in the Man High project so visitors can get inside and experience the cramped work space three Man High pilots had to work in.

Saturday

¥ 9 a.m. Saturday, pain management symposium at the Hallett Community Center with Simons speaking on "trigger point therapy." Simons met Dr. Janet Travell, who was White House physician during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and was so intrigued with her work he began a long, informal apprenticeship that led to "The Trigger Point Manual."

¥ In a second session on pain management at 10:30 a.m., Carolyn McMakin, clinical director of Integrated Pain Solutions and of the Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain Clinic of Portland, Ore., will speak on "microcurrent therapy."

¥ 2 p.m. Saturday, space presentations at the Crosby-Ironton High School Auditorium. Simons, former Apollo astronaut Duane Graveline and Dr. Marcello Vasquez, NASA liaison scientist with the Medical Department of Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, N.Y., will present a three-part symposium on cosmic radiation and other hazards to humans of space travel.

The discussion will range from what Man High II achieved to the future challenges of space travel, which now include Mars. Master of ceremonies for the program and leader of the question-and-answer session will be Kevin Taylor, Summerfield, Fla., who is Web master of national sites on space and flying subjects.

¥ 6:15 p.m.-Pre-banquet social hour open to the public at Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge. Dinner is limited to 120 limit. Cost is $31.42. Contact the Cuyuna Country Heritage Preservation Society for attendance.

¥ 7 to 9 p.m.-Dinner in the second floor banquet area. Pre-dinner presentation of "Man High Day" on the Cuyuna Range proclamation by Crosby clerk Cindy Nelson and short talks by Man High guests.

Sunday

¥ 10 a.m. Sunday a gathering and ceremonies at the Croft Mine Park open to the public and providing an opportunity for area residents and others to meet the Man High participants.

¥ Guests will be transported to the Portsmouth Mine overlook for a short ceremony where the DNR will unveil a Man High II Kiosk. A band will perform military numbers.

¥ At 10:45 a.m. return to Croft Mine Park for the Man High Ceremony. Colors will be presented by the Crosby and Ironton Legion posts, Carla Gutzman will present a prayer in song, "From a Distance." Greg Kennedy, author of a new book on Man High entitled "Touching Space" will introduce Simons who will speak on "The Messenger is Not the Message." Gen. Bruce Carlson will speak. Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., will give a keynote address.

The program will be followed by a complimentary picnic lunch, after which the Croft Mine Historical Park will provide participants with an opportunity to tour the Croft Mine Park underground mine simulation.
