Penhkus benefit planned Saturday in Pine River
PINE RIVER - Friends are hosting a benefit Saturday at the Pine River Fire Hall for Ann (Archer) Penhkus and family.
Penhkus fell ill to an unknown virus and has been hospitalized since June 17 in the intensive care unit of United Hospital in St. Paul. She was in a medically induced coma for four weeks in order to control seizure activity and was recently brought out of the coma. She will have a long road to recovery through rehabilitation and therapy once her condition is stabilized.
Penhkus' husband, Todd, who serves as a Pine River volunteer firefighter and first responder, is also a serviceman, whose July deployment to Iraq has been delayed due to her illness.
They have a 3-1/2-year-old daughter named Lauren. Ann Penhkus is the daughter of Dick and Punky Archer, who owned "The Nest" locally. Proceeds from this benefit will help with costs associated with Ann's care.
A pig roast dinner will take place from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at the Pine River Fire Hall. A silent auction and raffle are scheduled at that time, as well as kids' activities.
Cost is $8 for adults; $5 kids 6-12 and kids under 6 are free.
Cash donations may be made on Penhkus' behalf at Pine River State Bank in Pine River or mailed to Pine River State Bank, 103 Mill St. S., Pine River, MN 56474. Make donations payable to the Ann Penhkus Fund.

Central Lakes College will have two TRIO/Upward Bound programs on its campuses in Brainerd and Staples on Sept. 1.
Upward Bound is a pre-college program funded through the United States Department of Education that works with high school students who are low- income or whose parents do not possess a four-year college degree to give them the skills, abilities and motivation necessary to enter into and succeed in a post-secondary educational environment.
Last fall Charles Black Lance, TRIO director, and Nick Heisserer, assistant director of Upward Bound, were rewriting Upward Bound's current grant that serves high schools in Todd County and decided to write a second grant to expand the program to Morrison County and Mille Lacs County schools.
Upward Bound will add to existing target high school clients of Staples-Motley, Bertha-Hewitt, Browerville and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle to include Onamia, Isle, Nah-Ah-Shing and Pierz Healy high schools.
