Explosion third in state tournament SLOW-PITCH SOFTBALL
The Brainerd Explosion finished third in the Minnesota Sports Federation/ASA Class C state women's slow-pitch tournament Aug. 11-12 at Sauk Rapids.
The Explosion compiled a 5-2 record at the 17-team tournament after being eliminated in the loser's bracket semifinal.
Brainerd opened with a 16-10 win over Anoka-Hennepin before losing to Wright County 8-6 in the quarterfinals.
The Explosion bounced back by edging Long Prairie 11-10, defeating Owatonna 6-5, O'Brien's of Rice 11-6 and Doc's of Monticello 6-5 before falling to Chisago County 16-3.
Tiffany Dixon reached base 18 times to lead the Explosion, followed by Chelsea Dabill with 16; Rylie Rushmeyer, Steph Neugebauer and Megan Carlson 15; Jenny Sather 13; and Jessica Mohs, Hannah Brueland and Alyssa Lewandowski 10.
Dixon drove in a team-high 15 runs while Neugebauer had 12 RBIs and Dabill 10.
Kayla Jacobson pitched all seven games for the Explosion.
The Explosion, who finish the season 21-7, recently won their first Brainerd Division I women's league title.
Precision Electric of Brainerd also competed at the Class C women's state tournament. They were defeated by Chisago County 15-3 and Long Prairie 12-9.
