Excelsior Road segment will be closed two days for bridge
Excelsior Road in Baxter, from Cypress Drive to Conservation Drive, will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday for construction of the Paul Bunyan Trail bridge.

Filing for four Brainerd council seats opens Aug. 26

Filing for four Brainerd City Council seats up for election this year opens at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 26.

The seats up for election Nov. 4 are two at-large positions, the Ward 1 seat and the Ward 3 seat. The two at-large seats are currently held by Bob Olson and Mark O'Day, the Ward 1 seat is held by Lucy Nesheim and the Ward 3 seat is held by Kevin Goedker. Their terms end Dec. 31.

The filing period closes at 5 p.m. on Sept. 9. Candidates may file at the city administrator's office at Brainerd City Hall, 501 Laurel St. A $5 filing fee will be charged. Brainerd City Hall will be closed on Labor Day.

Utilities commission to meet Aug. 26<br>
The Brainerd Public Utilities Commission will meet at 9 a.m. on Aug. 26 at the BPU Service Center, 8027 Highland Scenic Road.

YAR accepting grant applications

Youth As Resources is accepting grant applications for grants ranging from $50 to $500 for youth-led community service projects. Youth groups, community organizations, religious communities, schools, classrooms and other not-for-profit organizations that actively engage young people up to age 21 in solving community problems are welcome to apply.

Projects must address a community need, be planned and implemented by a youth group located in the Brainerd lakes area.

Fall I YMCA swim lesson schedule is now available

The Brainerd Family YMCA's next swim lesson schedule is now available at the YMCA and on the Web at brainerdlakesymca.org. The session begins the week of Sept. 2 and meets once a week for seven weeks. These pre-school and school-age lessons are taught by trained instructors.

YMCA members can begin registering:

¥ Pre-school classes Aug. 25.

¥ School-age classes Aug. 26.

Community members can begin registering:

¥ Pre-school classes Aug. 27.

¥ School-age classes Aug. 28.

Interested persons may contact the Brainerd Family YMCA at 829-4767 or stop by at 602 Oak St. in Brainerd to register.

Fast Cop challenge set for Sept. 17

Fast Cop Inc. fifth annual High School Challenge will be Sept. 17 at Brainerd International Raceway. Gates will open at 4 p.m. and Minnesota high school students age 16-19 may enter. Participants must have a valid driver's license and a street legal vehicle to race.

There will be an open street legal class for licensed drivers who are not involved in the High School Challenge.

Last year's Crosslake-Ideal Lions High School Challenge drew students from 14 high schools along with hundreds of spectators. More than $4,000 in prizes were given out to the winners in 2007.
