PILLAGER - Cass County Board voted Tuesday to sell the county's last remaining interest in the former Cass County Community Resource Center (former Shopping Block) building at Pine River to Pine River Family Center for $100.
The Family Center now owns all but two back corner units in that building.
Administrator Robert Yochum reported abatement and demolition contractors have removed asbestos and other hazardous materials from the Ah-Gwah-Ching building complex at Walker. The demolition contractor has removed most of the salvageable materials from the buildings.
Structure demolition is scheduled to begin before the end of the month. The demolition contractor's bid was lower than actual demolition costs, because that firm could salvage some materials and re-sell them.
The county board Tuesday approved further reducing the cost $4,000, because the county has decided to retain the propane storage tank facility for future use. Yochum said he has been advised the propane facility is a premier set-up in northern Minnesota that is worth two or three times the salvage value.
The board approved a second change order to pay the demolition contractor an additional $5,160, because the contractor will not be able to salvage the fence around the property.
Yochum said the state removed the fencing and sold it before the county took possession of the property.
The board also approved paying the hazardous material abatement contractor an additional $37,065, because, as materials were removed from inside the building, additional hazardous materials were uncovered and also had to be removed.
