Contracts for road paving are awarded
Bids run higher than estimates, but county to pay excess cost from reserves
PILLAGER - Bids Cass County received for three road paving projects ran 5 to 6 percent over estimates, because of the rising oil prices. The county will pay the excess cost from fund balance reserves.

The county board Tuesday voted to award a contract to Reierson Construction of Bemidji for $223,123.36 to pave streets in Whipholt and to Knife River Material of Bemidji to pave County Roads 146 and 141 for $597,109.89.

County Engineer David Enblom said Leech Lake Tribal Council responded within two weeks to approve an easement to enable the county to improve Big Leech Road. He said, due to budget constraints, rebuilding that road will proceed, but paving likely will be delayed a year.

The board approved the county's five-year road construction plan. Enblom said he has tried to allow for likely cost increases, so projects will not have to be delayed during the next five years.

In 2009, the plan calls for paving the west half of CSAH 40 west of Hackensack in a joint project with Hubbard County, re-constructing CSAH 35 west of Pillager from Highway 210 to CSAH 34, reconstructing streets in Federal Dam, grading and paving Little Pine Road in Sylvan Township, engineering for a street project in Cass Lake and new gravel base on County Road 155 west of Outing.
