Business notes Shapiro is VISTA employee at CLC
Ben Shapiro is an AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America assigned to Central Lakes College by the Corporation for National Community Service for a yearlong commitment to service.
Shapiro is a full-time employee at CLC developing a student mentoring program for high school Upward Bound students and implementing a parent advisory council of Upward Bound parents.
He is from St. Cloud and was a social studies teacher in Virginia, Minn., after graduating from St. John's University in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in social science.
Upward Bound at Central Lakes College serves Bertha-Hewitt, Browerville, Isle, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Nah-Ah-Shing, Onamia, Pierz Healy and Staples-Motley high schools.
VISTA is often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps. Central Minnesota has 25 VISTA projects overseen by the Initiative Foundation of Little Falls, which provides all administration of the federal dollars used to fund VISTA initiatives.
Psychiatrist joins Lakewood Health System
STAPLES - Dr. Thomas A. Wittkopp, psychiatrist, joined Lakewood Health System in Staples as its newest on-staff specialist.
Wittkopp joins Dr. Mark Holub, psychiatrist, to provide comprehensive psychiatric services to patients at Lakewood Reflections, Lakewood Health System's senior behavioral health unit.
Wittkopp is a well-known psychiatrist for the region with 38 years of psychiatric experience. His recent practice has included Wadena, Staples, Baxter and Brainerd. Also acting as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Minnesota and the medical director for The Counseling Center in Brainerd, Wittkopp's experience in psychiatric care provides extensive knowledge and research to aid in diagnostics, treatment options and counseling for patients.
Wittkopp received his bachelor of science degree at the University of Minnesota. After medical school, Wittkopp finished his residency in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Hospitals.
Holmes completes advanced training
BAXTER - Dr. Leighanne Holmes, medical director and certified laser physician at Soulstis Med Spa, Baxter, recently completed advanced training in injectable therapy techniques through the offices of nationally known Dr. Lori Haddad and Connie Brennan.
Haddad is a board-certified dermasurgeon; the medical director for Birmingham Dermatology and The Skin Spa both located in Michigan; and a professor for the Dermatology Residency Program at Oakwood Hospital in Michigan. Holmes was able to learn the most advanced techniques in layering injectable therapies with laser skin services. The use of both laser and injectables to smooth and define areas around the eyes, mouth and cheeks renders the most effective results and requires fewer treatments.
Holmes complemented her training with Haddad by mentoring with Connie Brennan, a noted injector for Botox, Radiesse, Juvederm and Perlane.
Holmes recently attended two national conferences on aesthetic medicine. The first conference, the Cosmetic Dermatology Seminar in Santa Monica, Calif., was May 28-30. The second, the SCITONTM Summit-Midwest '09 Regional User's Meeting in Chicago, was July 11-12.
Rhuby joins Lakewood's rehabilitation department
STAPLES - Andrea Rhuby, speech-language pathologist, joined Lakewood Health System's Rehabilitation Department in July.
Rhuby will assist individuals who suffer from communication, language and swallowing disorders.
A recent graduate from St. Cloud State University, Rhuby completed her master's degree in speech-language pathology this spring. With experience at the Speech Language and Hearing Clinic at SCSU and St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd, Rhuby will provide speech and swallowing assessments, treatment plans and education for her patients.
Bremer Bank partners with Raymond James
Stephen Kruchten, president of Bremer Investments, a subsidiary of the privately held Bremer Financial Corp., recently announced Bremer Bank will utilize Raymond James Financial Services Inc., member FINRA/SIPC, to offer clients investment and wealth management services.
The conversion to the new services will take place in the third quarter.
Collins joins Lakewood as nursing director
STAPLES - The Lakewood Health System Care Center welcomes its newest addition, Patrick Collins, registered nurse, as director of nursing.
Collins joins Lakewood Health System as a result of growth. Pam Olson, the previous director of nursing is now the continuous quality improvement director of senior services, a new position within the Senior Services group at Lakewood Health System.
Collins received his bachelor's degree in 1996 from Millersville University in Pennsylvania. In 2006, he received his master's degree in health care administration from the University of Minnesota, School of Public Health in Minneapolis. Before joining Lakewood Health System, Collins acted as the director of nursing for the Community Memorial Home in Osakis.
Lawson gains promotion at Panache
BAXTER - Stylist Shannon Lawson, of Panache Salons & Day Spas in Baxter, was recently recognized for her exceptional guest service and skill in salon and spa services with a promotion from associate designer to designer, Panache reported.
Designer is the third of five levels used to rank stylists. Promotions depend on outstanding customer satisfaction ratings and continuing education in salon and spa services.
LHS Board trustees earn certification
STAPLES - Loren Morey and Emily Tholl of Lakewood Health System, Staples, were honored July 10 for completing a Minnesota Hospital Association board member certification program.
Certifications were awarded at MHA's 23rd annual summer trustee conference in Alexandria. Morey and Tholl were two of five hospital trustees to earn the designation under the voluntary program, which verifies their efforts to remain up-to-date on health care issues, hone their leadership skills and develop governance best practices.
To achieve the designation, participants had to earn, for example, 35 education units in topics as varied as strategic planning and positioning and patient safety and quality.
Morey has served on the Lakewood Health System board for two years. He is the former owner and president of Morey's Fish Co. in Motley. In 2006, he received the Initiative Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award for providing local jobs through Morey's and Trident Seafood.
Tholl, a former Pillager business owner, has served on the Lakewood Health System board for six years. Her contributions in contacting local and state representatives on health care issues have provided insight and knowledge for the board's decision-making process, Lakewood reported.
Kelchlin to assist as VISTA worker
Ben Kelchlin, an AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America, was sworn in as a member of the Initiative Foundation's central Minnesota VISTA project earlier this month and will be serving locally with Rural Renewable Energy Alliance of Pine River.
Kelchlin, Portland, Ore., will help the organization build its technical capacity to broaden its scope beyond the Minnesota borders and bring solar heat to low-income families across the nation.
After graduating from the Rochester Institute of Technology, N.Y., in mechanical engineering, Kelchlin gained experience as a mechanical test technician, and then moved on to an assistant chief engineer position at an engineering firm in Portland, Ore.
To enable Kelchlin to serve full time for a year, the Corporation for National and Community Service will provide him with a modest living allowance along with health insurance, training and relocation expenses. When he completes his service, he can choose between either a $1,200 cash stipend or an education award of $4,725 to help pay for further schooling, vocational training or qualified student loans.
Posner gains certification
STAPLES - Kristin Posner, registered nurse, Breast Health Navigator, became certified as a breast prosthetic fitter for Medical Marketplace at Lakewood Health System, Staples.
Medical Marketplace is a durable medical equipment store and a professional mastectomy prosthetics supplier.
Posner finished her American Breast Care Fitter Course in Minneapolis, which included instructional and hands-on experience.
Pitton joins Time Communications
Jon Pitton joined Time Communications, which has offices in White Bear Lake and Brainerd, as director of business development.
Pitton has more than 20 years of call center experience and will primarily focus on assisting corporate and catalog companies. As director of business development, Pitton will be involved with customer service, catalog order processing, centralizing incoming calls to set appointments, call center overflow and after-hours call answer support, answering service/emergency dispatch, e-commerce services.
DeRosier attends conference
Brian DeRosier of DeRosier & Associates in Brainerd attended a conference on July 28 in Bloomington.
The conference was sponsored by Jackson National Life and the featured speaker was Ed Slott, a nationally renowned certified public accountant who specializes in IRA retirement planning as seen on Minnesota Public Television. The emphasis of the conference was coaching planners to advise their clients in maximizing the benefits of their IRAs for themselves and their family. DeRosier is an independent registered representative of Askar Corp., member Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and Securities Investor Protection Corp.
Hedges joins Family of Christ Lutheran School
Ellie Hedges, Baxter, is the new preschool teacher at Family of Christ Lutheran School in Baxter.
She attended Concordia University, St. Paul, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. She worked as a preschool teacher in Golden Valley and as a nanny for a 5-year-old boy. Hedges will be meeting people at Zion Lutheran Church in Brainerd Aug. 30.
SOAR program focuses on leadership
PIERZ - Horizon Health Inc.'s RSVP's Successful Older Adult Resources Program offers seniors the ability to turn a lifetime of experience into leadership that matters, the program reported.
SOAR encourages people to overcome challenges of leadership later in life and supports them in finding new ways to use their leadership skills. SOAR'S next session begins Tuesday. SOAR will provide four sessions free of charge to adults 55 and older specially developed with senior leadership in mind.
The sessions utilize national trainers, local experts and senior leaders to inform, educate and empower SOAR participants. Classes are free and meet one Thursday a month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Horizon Health in Pierz. Lunch is included in the free registration. Certificates will be awarded to seniors who participate in all four classes. Classes are on Tuesday, Sept. 22, Oct. 27 and Nov. 24.

'Going Into Business' tips planned at CLC
"Going Into Business For Yourself" will be offered from 6-9 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Business and Industry Center on the campus of Central Lakes College, Brainerd.
This session covers all areas of business startup, helpful advice on how to get your dream off the ground and stay profitable, including financing a new venture.
Follow-up counseling is available to qualified individuals from the Small Business Development Center's team of consultants at no charge to the individual.
Tuition is $49 per person plus $29 for each additional business partner. Instructor is Jay Bock. Deadline to register is Sept. 3.

Boiler operation pre-licensing workshop planned
The Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College will be the site for a 30-hour boiler operation pre-licensing workshop Sept. 10-Oct. 1.
This 30-hour course provides an opportunity to upgrade one's license or prepare for taking the boiler's license exam from special to chief. Instruction includes operation of low and high-pressure boilers, steam formulas and turbines.
The workshop will be from 6-9 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Business and Industry Center. Tuition is $329, including books, payable at registration. Instructor is Dave Horn.

Culver's collects backpacks for Salvation Army
BAXTER - Culver's restaurant, 15222 Dellwood Drive, Baxter, is working with the Salvation Army, Brainerd, to collect new backpacks during the month of August.
The Salvation Army will distribute the backpacks to needy children. Each person who drops off a backpack will receive a coupon for a free sundae.
