Janet Boudart
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Janet Reed Boudart passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 17, 2009, in Santa Cruz, Calif., after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on March 22, 1954, in Larchmont, N.Y., as the youngest of five children, she spent her early childhood in Lakewood, Ohio. At the age of 10, she moved with her family to Rye, N.Y., where she graduated from high school in 1972. She enjoyed gymnastics, synchronized swimming and singing in a small girls' ensemble called "The Chansonettes." She entered Beloit College as a dance major, but soon transferred to the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where she graduated in 1977 with a bachelor of arts degree in landscape design.
Janet set a path for herself and then followed it wherever it led. As the free spirit she was, in her early 20s, she packed her bags and headed west by herself, looking for adventure and the place to live her dream life. Moab, Durango, Austin and Taos each had a landscape that drew her in. It was in Taos that she met the love of her life, her "cowboy," horse-and-dog-loving, smooth-dancing Marc.
Janet and Marc moved to Half Moon Bay, Calif., married and began a collaboration that lasted throughout their marriage. Using Marc's building expertise and Janet's talent for landscape and interior design, they bought and renovated several properties, which eventually moved them down the coast to their home in Rio Del Mar along the ocean. During these years, she was also a wellness consultant, devoted to helping people feel better and regain full health.
She had many passions including country-western dancing, singing and playing guitar, gardening and traveling. She also became quite adept at decorating very intricate and beautiful Ukrainian Easter eggs and designing women's clothing. Her love for animals was evident in her relationship with their golden retrievers; her cat, Freddie; and her special horse, Copper.
She will be remembered for her charismatic presence, warmth, generosity and determination.
Janet will be interred in Nisswa, Minn., where she summered on Cullen Lake with her family every year of her life, and where she developed an uncanny ability to mimic bird songs like those of the beloved loons of the lake. Her love for nature blossomed here, as well as her love of canoeing, fishing and kayaking. It was at "the cabin" in Minnesota where her soul was happiest and most at home.
The memorial service for Janet Reed Boudart will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Nisswa along County Road 18, where her ashes will be interred next to her father, Robert Reed, a World War II B17 pilot who established the initial combat air route across the Atlantic, and whom she loved and was so very proud of. This will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at 5:30 p.m.
