Public scoping meeting set for Sept. 6
The Crow Wing County Parks Department will host a public scoping meeting for the environmental assessment worksheet being done in Irondale Township at 6 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Hallett Community Center. Representatives from Crow Wing County and Ayers Associates will be present.

Nisswa Area Historical Society sets fall hours for depot site

The Nisswa Area Historical Society has announced its fall hours of the Pioneer Village, historic depot site and history center, all on Main Street in Nisswa: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and then 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 9, 16, 23 and 30. The complex will close for the season Sept. 30.

EDA to hear Main Street program presentation

The Main Street task force will make a presentation to the Brainerd Economic Development Authority at 8 a.m. Thursday at Brainerd City Hall.

The goal of a Main Street program for downtown Brainerd is to ensure the long-term viability of downtown through strengthened public and private activities and participation. The national Main Street program is a comprehensive commercial district revitalization strategy that has been widely successful in towns and cities nationwide. The four points of Main Street are organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring.

The Main Street task force includes representatives interested in the health of downtown Brainerd. The task force was formed after a community meeting in late March where the consensus of moving forward with a Main Street initiative was identified.

Brainerd Lutheran Social Service snags $100,000

Sen. Mark Dayton, D-Minn., announced Lutheran Social Service based in Brainerd, was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Department of Health and Human Service.

The grant will help the LSS Lakes Area Street Outreach Program to educate youth on the dangers of "couch hopping" (moving frequently with no permanent residence) and living on the street. The Lakes Area Street Outreach program also helps connect youths with short-term shelters and establish independent living situations.

LSS assists homeless or runaway youth, adults and families secure affordable housing; provides mental health counseling; and offers a youth mentoring program.

Airport commission to meet Sept. 6

The Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport Commission will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 6 in the airport conference room.

Local resident named a finalist in contest

When GRAND Magazine asked for nominees for grandparent of the year, Brainerd resident Norma Randall thought her husband, James, deserved the title and nominated him.

Although James Randall wasn't named the winner, he was listed as a finalist in the September-October issue of GRAND magazine.

Norma Randall's nomination said, "Jim is known to all the school children as Papa Jim and he can be found on the playground in the morning before school in the wind, rain, snow or sleet. For five years, Papa Jim has volunteered in the kindergarten class. He is a grandfather raising a grandchild and is loved by all the children at school. Papa Jim will keep volunteering in the kindergarten even though Amanda will be in middle school, but he hopes to go to middle school to volunteer also."
