Dry conditions cause for concern in area counties

Wildfire suppression officials are concerned about potential fire danger since much of Minnesota has been unusually dry since mid-June.

The weather has significantly impacted the drying of forest fuels in the state. Though some Minnesota communities and the North Shore received significant rain last week, much of the state remains extremely dry, including much of the western portion of the Arrowhead Region in northeast Minnesota.

Due to the dry conditions, Lake, Cook and St. Louis counties have burning restrictions in effect, as do southern Beltrami, Cass and Crow Wing counties. These restrictions are for open burning and do not restrict campfires on state and private property. The Superior National Forest has additional restrictions in effect for a portion of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness affected by the 1999 blowdown storm.

A period of warmer than normal temperatures and below normal rainfall is predicted along with increasing windy conditions through the holiday weekend and into this week.

People enjoying barbecues or campfires during the Labor Day weekend are urged to be extra careful and never leave a fire unattended.

YMCA launches new Web site

The Brainerd Family YMCA Web site was revealed this past week and is updated with information for fall programs. The Web site is more user friendly and easier to navigate.

Available to download as PDF files are the following: registration forms for adult coed volleyball league, women's dodgeball and basketball leagues, youth soccer and flag football leagues, dolphin swim team, kids club after-school care and schedules for swim lessons, gym use, lap pool, aquatics center and group exercise fitness classes.

The YMCA fall program guide, which provides all program information for September through December, also can be downloaded.

YMCA members receive early registration for some programs and reduced fees on all programs and classes.

Visit the YMCA Web site at www.brainerdlakesymca.org or call the YMCA for more information at 829-4767.

Hunt family provides $30,000 endowment

The Lake Superior College Foundation in Duluth has received $30,000 from the Hunt family of Pine River to expand its current endowed scholarship fund. The Hunt Family Scholarship Fund, established in 2006, will provide a $2,000 scholarship for a full-time student each academic year.

"Our family believes in education but not in the debt that it creates for many people," said Lynn Hunt. "We hope that this gift will allow students to be less debt-ridden and freer to follow their path. In turn, they can help others by passing it on."

Based in Pine River, Lynn and Paul Hunt, owners of Hunt Utilities Group LLC, are eco-minded philanthropic entrepreneurs exploring and developing systems that support ecological living. The Hunts also founded Happy Dancing Turtle, a nonprofit organization that focuses on sustainable living education and research.
