The new ultimate triathlon began with 56 participants dipping into water in preparation for a one-mile swim at Grand View Lodge. The swim was followed by a bicycle race around Gull Lake and a 4.8 mile run.

30 years ago (1978)

The average price for gasoline is 67.7 per gallon for regular. Most stations said the gasoline supply is plentiful.

40 years ago (1968)

William Fitzsimmons, a 21-year veteran of the Brainerd police force was named chief of police by the mayor and city council. Fitzsimmons will replace Louis Rofidal.

60 years ago (1948)

The biggest collection of boats ever seen together went on parade in the Gull Lake chain yesterday afternoon. Thirty boats in all participated in the event organized by the Gull Lake Yacht Club. Most of the boats were inboard craft.

80 years ago (1928)
