BAXTER - Class 2A's third-ranked Wayzata Trojans scored five goals in the first half and went on to beat the Brainerd Warriors 7-0 Saturday at Southdale Field.
Wayzata outshot the Warriors 20-3 as Brainerd keeper Cam Anderson made 13 saves.
"I thought our girls moved the ball a lot better but failed to get past that defense in the end," Warriors coach Sara Rojas said. "Wayzata is just a phenomenal team. We tried to put four back on defense and I think that kept the score from becoming worse than it actually was.
"We were moving the ball better and our movement off the ball was better. We were getting positioning, giving players someone to pass to. We played smarter defense. Friday, we jabbed at the ball more. Saturday, we let them make the mistake and got the ball."
The Warriors have been outscored 11-0 in the season's first two games. Brainerd dropped its opener 4-0 to Stillwater Friday.
"The teams we're going to be playing now are a little more realistic competition for us," Rojas said, "but you're not going to get better if you're not competing against good teams. We'll take what we saw, learn from it and move on for our upcoming Alexandria game (Thursday) and we'll be more competitive with Buffalo (Tuesday), which is in our section."
