WALKER- The Cass County Board voted Tuesday to set the preliminary 2009 property tax levy at $19,985,613. That is 3.9 percent over the 2008 levy.
This is the level the citizen budget committee recommended to the board.
Under state statute levy limits for local governments this year, the county could have taken advantage of additional special levies to go as high as 4.18 percent over 2008. The amount set is $750,182 more than 2008.
The board is allowed to lower the final 2009 levy, but not raise it from the 3.9 percent increase level after receiving public comment at the annual truth-in-taxation public hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 4 at the courthouse in Walker.
Final approval for the county's 2009 levy and budget is expected at the board's 9 a.m. Dec. 18 meetings.
Also scheduled for approval Dec. 18 will be the annual county equipment replacement budget.
