ST. CLOUD - A late Britta Nelson goal was the difference for the Brainerd girls' soccer team as the Warriors squeezed past Central Lakes Conference rival St. Cloud Tech 2-1 Tuesday night at St. Cloud State University.
Despite outshooting the Tigers 12-3 in the first half, Brainerd was only able to manage a one goal as Natalie Taylor scored off of a Kellie Barnaby assist at 22:19 for a 1-0 lead into the second half.
Despite only mustering another three shots in the second half Tech was able to strike back with an early tying goal as Claire Murn snuck a shot past Warriors goalkeeper Cami Andersen in the 47th minute.
The game remained tied until Nelson found the net for the deciding goal with Kelly Rosenthal assisting on the play.
The Warriors managed to outshoot the Tigers 24-6 as they raised their Central Lakes Conference record to 3-0.
"It was a classic Central Lakes Conference girls' soccer game," Warriors coach Steve Kimble said. "St. Cloud is always one of our big rivals. They are young this year so we expect good things from them down the road.
"Our girls stuck out a barn-burner and were able to come up with a huge goal at the end. A lot of people played well but the big one was Britta Nelson getting that goal in the second half."
