Brainerd wins final relay, dual meet
SARTELL - As Brainerd Warriors coach Dan Anderson said, "The meet came down to 16/100ths of a second."

That was the margin of victory for Brainerd's 400 freestyle relay of Nikki Hansen, Destiney Schindele, Sarah Dens and Siri Smith in the final event of the night as the Warriors beat the Sartell Sabres 97-89 in Central Lakes Conference action Thursday.

"They had to go 1-3 to beat us," Anderson said. "(Sartell) took one person off the (A) relay and put her on their B relay. That worked out for us because we ended up winning by 16/100ths of a second."

Brainerd won despite only one other victory, by Sam Smith in diving. Diving teammates Katie and Tiffany Etterman finished 2-3 to help the Warriors score 10 points in that event.

"It's hard to win when they win almost every event," Anderson said. "The only way to outpoint them is to go 2-3-4 in every event. That's the way it was in a lot of events, like the 200 free. They win and we go 2-4-5. The whole meet was like that.

"Basically, our 2-3-4 girls were better than their 2-3-4 girls. It was a real team effort. A rule of thumb usually is if you can win two relays you're probably going to win the meet. We won one relay - barely.

"Those girls had a lot of pressure on them (in the last relay). They had to win the relay to win the meet. They did a great job."
