WILLMAR - Jake Williams scored the Brainerd Warriors' first goal and had an assist on their second to spark a 2-1 victory over Willmar in Central Lakes Conference play Thursday.
In a game that featured all of the scoring in the first half, Williams and Chris Nathan, who scored the team's second goal, provided the offensive spark needed for the win.
Brainerd goalkeeper Brian Sexton also played a key role in the win as he turned away 10 Cardinal shots on goal to hold the Warriors' lead. Despite being outshot 11-9, Brainerd was able to capitalize on its limited offensive chances.
"It was a real physical game," Brainerd coach Cahil Collins said. "Willmar has some experienced soccer players but the boys played well and capitalized on their chances. Jake Williams played an excellent game to help us win."
Goalkeepers: Brd Brian Sexton 10 saves, Will 7 saves
Conference: Brd 3-1. Overall: Brd 3-1. Next: Brainerd vs. Elk River at Baxter 11 a.m. Saturday.
