Brainerd sophomores open with victory
LOCAL SPORTS SHORTS
The Brainerd Warriors sophomore football team defeated St. Cloud Tech 37-21 in its opener Thursday.

Brainerd's Tommy Olsen returned a punt 55 yards for a TD to open the scoring. Running back Matt Pohlkamp pushed Brainerd's lead at the half to 29-0 with TD runs of 45 and 55 yards, plus an extra-point kick.

Nick Welch's TD runs of 1 yard and 18 yards closed out the Warrior victory.

Dustin Borlaug completed a pass to Logan Peterson for a 2-point conversion and Mitch McLain also completed a conversion pass to Borlaug.

Brainerd's defense, led by Trevor Dukowitz's interception, limited Tech to 202 total yards.

The sophomores host Bemidji at 5 p.m. Thursday at Adamson Field.

JV swimmers win

The Brainerd Warriors junior varsity swimming and diving team won 10 events and beat Sauk Rapids 110-62 Thursday.

Mindy Jacobson won two the 100 free and 100 breaststroke), Alyssa Hartshorn (200 free), Kaylie Johnson (200 IM), Grace Larson (50 free), Enid Swaggert (100 fly) and Paige DeFrang (100 back).

Relay winners were the teams of Grace Larson, Kassi Kavanaugh, Kirstie Billman, Kaylie Johnson (200 medley); Billman, Nicole Meier, AJ Panzer, Kavanaugh (200 free); and Swaggert, Hartshorn, Ariana Pelkey, Johnson (400 free).

JV boys' soccer wins

Brainerd defeated Alexandria 3-2 in junior varsity boys' soccer Thursday.

Goalkeeper Matt Benson made eight saves.

Brainerd's Denver Safgren scored in the 15th minute, assisted by Joshua Murrey.

In the second half, Ben Anderholm scored in the 58th minute, assisted by Evan Werthman, and Brayden Campbell scored in the 78th minute, assisted by Murrey.
