LOCAL BRIEFS Land use decisions to be topic at meeting
Phil Hunsicker, lakes region program director for 1000 Friends of Minnesota, will discuss land use decisions at the Sept. 13 meeting of the League of Women Voters of the Brainerd Lakes Area. The meeting, which is open to the public, is at noon Sept. 13 at the First Congregational Church at 415 Juniper St.
Hunsicker's organization is a nonprofit group that seeks to promote development that creates healthy communities while conserving natural areas, family farms, woodlands and water.
Hunsicker has been a fisheries biologist in Alaska, a wildlife reserve director for the World Wildlife Fund in central Africa, a Peace Corps volunteer in central Africa and the writer of an unpublished novel.
'Biking Bob' on his last ride for scholarships
Robert Erickson, known as "Biking Bob," pedaled to the Staples and Brainerd campuses of Central Lakes College Tuesday on his sixth and final fundraiser for working, part-time student scholarships.
Erickson is a trustee emeritus with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board.
To date, Erickson's rides have provided scholarships to 225 students, including a half dozen at CLC.
Erickson said he will retire from the campaign at the end of this year's ride with plans for other recreational biking tours accompanied by his soon-to-be retired wife.
