EXTRA CREDIT
Renee Branshaw, daughter of Jane and Steve Branshaw, Brainerd, and Tyler Rose, son of Stephen and Charlotte Rose, Baxter, received the Elizabeth J. Larimore and Sadie P. Mathews Community of Learners Scholarship from the University of North Dakota for the 2008-2009 academic year. The scholarship is awarded to students chosen for past academic performance. Elizabeth Larimore was one of the earliest settlers of the Larimore, N.D., area. Her sister, Sadie, graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1900. The Community of Learners Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who have shown exemplary achievement in both high school grade-point average and in test scores.
Michael Ruen was sponsored by the Brainerd Lakes Sunrise Rotary Club and recently spent a week attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Award Camp at the University of Minnesota-Crookston. Camp RYLA's mission is to provide outstanding high school students with a variety of educational and recreational activities that provide opportunities for leadership and team building.
Laura K. Radniecki, daughter of John and Kathy Hensel of Brainerd, was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in nursing. She is the wife of Matthew Radniecki. She would like to pursue a career in obstetrics nursing.
Sara Jane Curell, daughter of Julie and Curt Loisel, Brainerd, and Larry Curell, Backus, recently graduated from northwestern College of Chiropractic. She received her doctor of chiropractic degree and is pursuing her diplomate in pediatrics and animal chiropractic. She is the granddaughter of Barb Gottsch, Palisade, the late Warren Beal and great-granddaughter of Gladys and Sheldon Carlson.
Stephanie Lewis, Brainerd, and Samantha Rosenthal, Staples, were named to the summer semester dean's list at North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D.
Ashely Butenhoff, daughter of Charles and Therese Butenhoff, Aitkin, received a bachelor of arts degree in nursing from St. Scholastica in Duluth.
Kristi Takasaki, daughter of Ted and Lori Takasaki, East Gull Lake, and a member of the Brainerd FFA Chapter, recently received the American FFA Degree. Takasaki is one of a select group of individuals to receive the degree recognizing members for years of academic and professional excellence. She will receive her award Oct. 25 at the 81st National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. Only 3,341 of the 500,823 members nationwide are recognized with the American FFA Degree. Takasaki is currently enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, pre-vet program.
Sarah Walker, daughter of Tim and Lisa Walker, Pine River, served as a nursing intern in the intensive care unit this summer at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Walker is a senior nursing student at Anderson University in Anderson, Ind. She hopes to complete her music performance degree in violin in Helsinki, Finland, in the fall of 2009. Walker also was selected as a finalist in the 2008 Carpe Diem Foundation of Illinois Scholarship Competition. The award is based upon outstanding leadership, community service, character, academics and potential to improve the quality of human life.
