Business owner gets more time to resolve tax issue
CROW WING COUNTY BOARD
Crow Wing County set up a plan that would give an area business owner 90 more days to either sell her building or pay her taxes before the property goes on the tax forfeited list.

Beth Watson of Harting Shoe Repair in Brainerd, appealed to the county board for more time. Watson was facing a Sept. 15 deadline to pay about $3,000 in taxes. Watson met with department heads and county staff members to see it there were other options.

On Thursday the board agreed to give Watson an extension to Dec. 31. Watson's building on Washington Street is for sale. Watson said health issues were involved in the reason the business fell behind in the taxes but she said the business is there and she hopes to continue in a smaller setting.

"It's the only solution I see," Watson said. After 70 years in business, Watson, who wiped away tears, said it was emotional to think Harting Shoe Repair would end.

Commissioner Paul Thiede complimented staff members for coming up with an equitable solution and said it is an example of government working toward solutions.

In other business, the board:

Heard a public hearing is set at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Nisswa City Hall to consider a tax-increment financing district in the city of Nisswa for a Grand View Resort conference center.

ETOC Co. is proposing the construction of a $2.9 million 18,000-square-foot convention and meeting facility. The economic district is expected to have a duration of eight years. The center is expected to be completed in 2009.

Costs that may be financed through the TIF program include economic development costs, financing costs and administrative costs totaling $341,766.
