Oberstar to be honored at Walker airport rededication
WALKER - Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., will be given an award of appreciation for his assistance in obtaining state and federal funding for the Walker Airport at a rededication ceremony at that city-owned airport at 9 a.m. Sunday.

The airport is located four miles north of Walker on Highway 371. The event is sponsored by the city of Walker and the Civil Air Patrol.

Spaghetti dinner fundraiser for dance team is Sept. 28

The Brainerd Outback Bowl Dance Team is conducting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to help lower the costs of its trip to dance in the halftime show at the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla. on Jan. 1.

The dinner will be at Ernie's on Gull from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 28. The dinner includes garlic bread, caesar salad, and four kinds of sauce with the spaghetti (beverages are not included).

Tickets will be on sale between 3:30 and 7:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday at the Just For Kix studio or at the door the night of the dinner.

YMCA Mommy and Me Program starts this fall

The Brainerd Family YMCA's Mommy and Me class will introduce little ones to the joys of exercise through music, movement, gentle stretches, breathing, relaxation and fun! This class is designed to improve balance, posture and core strength while spending quality time together. Daddies are welcome too.

Session I Sept. 20 Ð Oct. 18, Session II Oct. 25 Ð Nov. 22. Saturday mornings, 11:40 a.m. -12:15 p.m. For Ages 3 and up, fee $20. Spots may be reserved by calling the YMCA at 829-4767. Class size is limited.

Funding available to enhance area transportation system

STAPLES - State Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, is encouraging area residents to consider applying for funding for transportation enhancement projects through the Region Five Development Commission.

To qualify, the project must be implemented during fiscal year 2013 (July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013), and fall under one of 12 categories, some of which include: pedestrians and bike facilities, acquisition of scenic or historic easements and sites, landscaping and scene beautification, historic preservation, control and removal of outdoor advertising, and establishment of transportation museums, among others.

A special workshop is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 8, at the Region Five Development Commission Office located at 403 Prairie Ave. NE in Staples.

Applicants will need to complete a short pre-application before attending this workshop. To attend, please RSVP by Oct. 1, by calling 218-894-3233 or by e-mail at cetzler@regionfive.org.

Former Sen. Dayton will visit Brainerd DFL office

Former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton, D-Minn., will visit the Brainerd DFL office at 2027 Sixth St. S. at 10 a.m. Thursday. The office is located across from Brainerd Medical Center.

Dayton and former Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Roger Moe will take part in a civility forum at the Rosenmeier Center at Central Lakes College's Brainerd campus at noon Thursday.
